Florida State Reloads to Enjoy Dominant 2013 Season
The Florida State Seminoles entered Jimbo Fisher’s fourth season at the helm facing as many questions as ever since Fisher took over as head coach in 2010.
Questions about how they would replace the 11 players from last year’s 12–2 ACC Championship team who were selected in the NFL Draft.
Questions about how Fisher would cope with the loss of seven of his assistant coaches—six from the year before and one who bolted after only a month on the job.
And a big question about exactly who would be making his first start under center when the Seminoles began their season at Pittsburgh.
Those questions and several others added up to the idea that these Seminoles shouldn’t be this good. Not this fast. Not this year.
A national championship might be on the horizon, but first the team would have to go through some growing pains.
It turns out, though, that Fisher and the Seminoles made all the right moves, had all the right answers.
And it all culminated on January 6 in Pasadena, California, where, in their first appearance at the famed Rose Bowl Stadium, the Seminoles topped Auburn, 34–31, to claim their third football national championship and first since 1999.
This is what you play for, this is what you prepare for,
Fisher said. Like I always talk about, a team has a one-year identity, a one-year life span, and that is the ultimate goal.
FSU began the season with a fairly anonymous No. 11 national ranking. But it didn’t take long for the Seminoles to announce themselves as major players for that ultimate goal.
After winning a months-long quarterback competition that position coach Randy Sanders still insists was not a unanimous thing,
Jameis Winston, a redshirt freshman from Hueytown, Alabama, led the Seminoles to Pittsburgh’s Heinz Field for a primetime, Labor Day contest that marked the Panthers’ inaugural game as members of the Atlantic Coast Conference.
What followed was one of the most remarkable freshman debuts in modern college football history.
In the end, all came up roses for Florida State in the BCS National Championship Game at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. Seminoles head coach Jimbo Fisher kissed the Coaches’ Trophy during the presentation after the game.
Winston’s night began with a 13-yard completion to sophomore receiver Kelvin Benjamin. And then a 20-yard hookup with senior Kenny Shaw. And then nine more completed passes before he finally made a mark in the incomplete
column. And even that was a pass that Shaw caught just barely out of bounds.
By the time the clock hit zero, Winston had completed 25-of-27 passes (92.5 percent) for 356 yards and four touchdowns, and the Seminoles routed Pittsburgh 41–13.
From there, Florida State’s avalanche continued to roll.
As weeks passed, the Seminoles posted rout after rout, pausing only for a brief, first-half scare on September 28 at Boston College. Even then, FSU erased an early 14-point deficit by halftime and came away with a 48–34 victory, its closest of the season.
That was a critical [moment]. I loved the way we handled it,
Fisher said. We were down 17–3, and our guys never blinked, came right back.
Otherwise, the Seminoles were never seriously threatened, and that includes a midseason showdown at then-No. 3 Clemson, where Winston became a household name by telling his teammates to put a smile
on their faces during a televised pregame speech. He then went out and threw for 444 yards and three touchdowns in a 51–14 romp that propelled FSU to No. 2 in the BCS standings.
By the time the Seminoles completed their 45–7 pasting of Duke at the ACC Championship Game, they had outscored their opponents by a combined 689–139 and entered the BCS National Championship Game just 28 points away from becoming the highest scoring team in college football history.
And they had ascended to their first No. 1 national ranking since 2000.
The NCAA has all these rules,
Winston said. But it does not say you cannot blow out everybody you play. That’s the mentality we took.
Winston and the offense, of course, didn’t do it all by themselves.
They were aided by a remarkable season from the FSU defense, which in its first season under coordinator Jeremy Pruitt posted No. 1 national rankings in passing yards allowed (152.0), passing efficiency defense (90.90), passing yards allowed per completion (4.94), and passes intercepted (25).
FSU’s defenders scored eight touchdowns this
