has been truly said that "Necessity is the Mother of

THE NEED

This is but another way of saying that when an area of customer need arises, somewhere some group is figuring out a way to take care of such need. In the instance of this particular lighting need, it has been Sylvania's development group that has applied its talent to designing a Mercury lamp that will withstand severe vibration and shock conditions, such as are occasionally encountered in certain types of industrial and commercial installations.
The inner assembly of a Mercury lamp is a very intricate

function of producing light. It is important to the life of the lamp that none of these parts gets shaken loose or thrown out otherwise the lamp is out of business long before of alignment

and precisely constructed unit, composed of many integrated parts, each of which is important either directly or indirectly in the

its appointed -time. With this situation in mind, Sylvania engineers set out to produce a special fannily of Mercury lamps that would solve the

H()u' THE PROBLEM \^/AS LICKED

Look at the sturdy frame that supports the all-important arc tube in Sylvania's ROUGH SERVICE line. Compare it with the inner assembly used in ordinary Mercury lamps. Note how many "spot-welded" joinings have been eliminated (and keep in mind that in most cases, when something "gives" it is most likely to be the part that is joined by a spot weld. You can see for yourself that in the ROUGH SERVICE lamp, the assembly is

literally locked-in. Here is a lamp especially designed to meet the particular requirements of the Mercury lamp user who, because of inescapable punishing conditions surrounding his application of lamps, needs extra durability without sacrifice of light output.

HO\^' TO BEAT THE HIGH COST OF PREMATURE FAILURES

From the standpoint of the plant engineer, the economics are easy to flgure. Considering the relatively high unit price of the intricately constructed Mercury lamp, he knows that his investment in lamps alone can become prohibitive if compulsory replacements reach the point where he has to use two or three lamps to get the total life performance that he should normally expect from just one lamp. Sylvania's ROUGH SERVICE lamp is the answer to that problem . . . the lamp that will keep burning after ordinary lamps have quit!
