SUNDAY AFTER CHRISTMAS. BY REV. ASHTON OXENDEN, D.D.ST. MATT. i. 18-25. The birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise : When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together she was found with child of the Holy Ghost. Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily. But while he thought on theso things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, them son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife ; for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost : And she shall bring forth a Son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS ; for he shall save his people from their sins. (Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Behold, a Virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a Son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.) Then Joseph, being raised from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife ; and knew her not till she had brought forth her first-born

So it is with those blessed truths which are poured out so abundantly upon us at Christmas time. It is not merely on Christmas day that our Church announces the joyful news of the Saviour s birth. The sound of these glad tidings lingers day after day in our ears. The drops continue to fall. Thus we find the Gospel of to-day still speaking to us concerning the birth of Him who came to redeem us.

Our Lord s birth was no ordinary birth. It was altogether miraculous. And as the time drew near that Mary should bring forth her Son, an angel appeared to Joseph in a dream, directing him to take her to his own home, and without fear to treat her as his espoused wife, for that which was conceived in her was of the Holy Ghost/ And then the angel adds, She shall bring forth a Son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS, for he shall save his people from their sins/ St. Ma.tthew tells us moreover that all this was a fulfilment of an ancient prophecy, which Isaiah delivered, saying, Sunday after Christmas. 59 .Behold, a Virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a Son, and they shall call His name Emmanuel/
