The purpose of large rugs in our house
I used to think that large rugs were justfor rich people to show off that theycould buy expensive rugs. Thissuspicion was cemented when I workedas a properties mistress in a play. I hadto secure two area rugs for the stage.The two rugs that were lent to us wereselling for close to $30,000. It wasn’tuntil we bought our first home that myopinion changed. I didn’t wantcarpeted rooms in my house, but Ididn’t end up having a choice. It’sextremely hard to find a house that fitsyour every desire when you don’t haveunlimited money to spend. So Icompromised and got a house that wasalmost entirely carpeted.This is where my first need for large rugs appeared. We have two dogs and three cats. This new housealso didn’t have a fenced-in back yard. This mean that any time an animal decided to knock over abeverage or be sick, it showed up on our carpet. Our carpet was light in color and not of a very goodquality. Soon after moving in, we needed to cover up stains and flaws in the carpet. That’s when mylarge rug search began. As it turns out, large rugs aren’t that expensive. It’s actually very easy to findattractive, quality rugs at flea markets. In my area, rug sellers make up almost 10% of the booths at mylocal flea market. I can get rugs as small as doormats. I can get hallway runners, and I can get large arearugs. This was a pleasant surprise for me. Our first purchase of a large rug was to cover up our livingroom carpet. It had a few advantages. It was cheaper than replacing the carpet and it was moreattractive than our original carpet. Finally, if our dogs and cats messed it up again, we could replace itinexpensively.
