Kingspan Insulated Panels Lead The Way For Sustainable Success
Kingspan Insulated Panels has won a prestigious awardfrom Building Magazine. The Sustainability awardsrecognise and reward construction businesses whoactively pursue sustainable solutions, and Kingspanis winner of the 2007 Best Sustainable BusinessPractice category. Kingspan Insulated Panels activelypursue excellence in environmental sustainability andend of life management. A key project in Kingpan’ssustainability ambitions has been the commissioningof the Kingspan Sustainability Report. It has helpedto outline exisiting achievements and areas for futuredevelopment, as well as gaining a Global ReportingInitiative Application Level C. In February 2007 keyroof and wall panel products with an ECOsafe core fromKingspan’s Holywell facility were independently verifiedby the Building Research Establishment (BRE) ashaving a top ‘A’ rated lifetime environmental profile.

Mastic AsphaltOne Industry – Zero Carbon
A major part of the UK constructionbusiness has made environmental history– establishing a world first that couldset the pattern for all British industry.Following more than a year to launchand research, mastic asphalt, a material used to waterproof the majority of thenation‘s most prestigious buildingsand commercial developments, hasachieved the CarbonZero standard.The standard covers the product frommanufacture through to installation.Every stage of the process has achievedCarbonZero. The Mastic Asphalt Council,representing the UK’s leading contractorsand manufacturers, unveiled its radical Carbon 100 initiative on January 18. Theinitiative, which involves placing a small levy on the cost of the materials, ensuresthat even non-MAC members are covered.The industry has effectively taxed itself in order to aid the environment.

Light-weight, Sustainable SolutionFor Septic And STP Soakaways
The labour-intensive, costly and time-consumingactivity of installing traditional herring-bonedrainage soakaways for septic tanks and sewagetreatment plants could now be a thing of thepast. Ezy-Drain, which has just been launched inthe UK by Klargester, is a new type of pipe systemthat is lightweight, easy to use, high-performanceand environmentally friendly. Ezy-Drain comprisesof sections of perforated plastic pipe surroundedby a synthetic aggregate wrapped in polyethylenenetting. Each three-metre section of pipe is joined together quite simply by the use of click-fit connectors, protected by a preformed collar.The result is an extremely lightweight system thatcan be quickly installed by a single person up tofour times faster than any gravel-based solution.

Novostrat, The New Name In Insulation, Is Growing - Fast
Novostrat Limited maybe a relatively new name in the UK but it is the largest manufacturerof Polyethylene insulation products in Ireland, with distribution facilities throughout the UKand Continental Europe. Novostrat is already becoming well know for its underfloor insulationproducts, which range from ‘standard’ carpet underlay to the company’s most recently launchedproduct ‘Sonic GoldExcel’, which is ahigh performanceacoustic insulationand vapour barrierachieving 22dB soundreduction. But it iswith an eye to thegeneral constructionmarket that Novostrat faces the future. Polyethylene insulation products are inherentlyenvironmentally responsible, being totally recyclable as off-cuts or at the end of their long life,they are manufactured producing no harmful halogens and are CFC and HCFC free material. Thenew product range, which will be rolled out during 2008, will encompass more flooring products,roof and wall insulation, and under concrete ‘plank’ insulation products.

In Derbyshire, a cottage has been renovated tomodern standards including applications of KNXbuilding services control technology. The lighting,heating, audio andsecurity are controlled togive modern life choices.The cottage has 45 KNXdimmed and switched lighting circuits that canbe used to set moods for each room. This allowsfor scenes to be set for particular instances.KNX allows lights to be incorporated into otherfeatures of a house. Water based underfloorheating is controlled using thermostatic lightswitches. The KNX system lowers temperaturesat night when everyone is asleep and a fewdegrees lower than normal when the house isunoccupied.
