Copper: a Smart Choice
PolishCopperPromotionCentre
In 1995, Polish Copper Promotion Centreinitiated its promotional activities toincrease overall use o copper and its alloyson the market and in everyday lie. Theseoperations are still coordinated and nancedby International Copper Association – anorganization representing copper producersworldwide.
A
ter 50 years o unocial ban on copper applications, PolishCopper Promotion Centre (PCPC) started by building a solidoundation (mainly inrastructure elements), which wasessential to launch copper and its alloys to the market. PCPCcreated a database o proessional educational handbooks, which o-cused on the area o copper installation and roong. These publica-tions are available on our web site: www.pcpm.pl. We inuenced thescope and content o normative acts, which are related to copperapplications in energy and building industries. We successul-ly implemented projects to promote energy eciency. Theseprojects were nanced by, or example, Global EnvironmentFacility (PEMP Project) and European Union (4EM-MCP, SEEDT,LPQI, LPQIVES). The LEONARDO Power Quality Initiative(LPQI) started by European Copper Institute (ECI) was a greatsuccess in Poland, where the seminar program was carried outin cooperation with higher technical educational institutions. InUkraine, we began with promotion o Power Quality initiative, and use o copper in architecture and installation. Here is a list o our topic related web sites:

Polish Copper Promotion Centre is one o 29 international centers with main ocus on promotion o this metal and its alloys. These centers’ operations are nanced by global copper market; afliated with International Copper Association Ltd located inNew York City. In Europe, the central ofce o European Copper Institute is located in Brussels. Promotional centers in Europe, which are directly associated with ECI are in twelve European countries (e.g. Poland, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, and manymore). Polish Copper Promotion Centre started its operations in 1995 in Wroclaw, Poland. KGHM Polska Miedź S.A. is a membero International Copper Association.

Over the years,scientists havediscovered that:
• Small amounts of copper may
impede a the development o many kinds o moulds, algae andpathogenic micro-organisms
• Copper shows anti-microbial
properties in wet and dampenvironments
• Copper exhibits a number of
disinecting properties The antimicrobial mechanisms o copper are very complex and areactive in many ways, both insidecells as well as in areas betweencells. These antimicrobialmechanisms o copper are thesubject o continuous scienticresearch carried out in coopera-tion with Regional CopperPromotion Centers, which arealiated with the InternationalCopper Association.
Copper:an essentialelement o thehuman organism
Copper is necessary or the growthand development o bones, connective tissue, brain, heart, andmany other organs in the humanbody. It participates in creating redblood cells, absorption and the use o iron, synthesis, as well as the releaseo proteins and enzymes whichsupport lie processes. Theseenzymes release energy within cellsand regulate nerve connectivity, blood coagulation and oxygentranser. It is well known that copperhas multiple efects on stimulation o the immune system, rebuildsdamaged tissue and acilitates thehealing o injuries. Recently, copperhas played an important role in theneutralization o „ree radicals”, whichmay critically damage cells.

Copper & Human Health
I
n the 21st century, copper consistently serves people inthe economy, amily lie and by saeguarding their health.Presumably, copper will change the ace o currentmedical care due to its bacteriostatic properties. Theseproperties have been known and used since ancient times.Antibiotic-resistant bacteria are the cause o a growing numbero hospital-related inections worldwide. To lower the rate o cross inections caused by microorganisms, it is possible toreplace health care equipment that comes into contact withpeople by touch or through ood), with copper alloy suraces (e.g.bed rails, door handles, electric sockets, stethoscopes and pensused by medical staf, etc). Most signicant scientic ndingsindicate the high efectiveness o copper and its alloys in the ghtagainst microorganisms in hospitals, including the Methicillin-re-sistant bacteria Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).

Today, not only sacralbuildings use copper;promoted in architecture,it adorns modernbuildings in interestingways
Through copper’s color range, architectural buildings gainindividual charm and style

ince the beginning o humanhistory, copper has signiicantlyinluenced the development o civilization. Due to the discove-ry o copper, humanity emerged romthe Stone Age. When people combinedcopper with tin, they obtained an alloyknown as Bronze, which or centurieswas used to make weapons, tools, crockery and jewelry. The oldest bronzeworks, like ARSENIC bronzes, were pro-duced during the 5th century BC in theMiddle East. The Bronze Age ended withthe discovery o iron. Copper made avictorious comeback in the twentiethcentury with the Age o Electricity. Thedynamic development o technologysince the discovery o electricity hasbeen due to copper’s excellent currentconductivity. This is why copper is the benchmark or the conductivity o other electricalconductors. This property, in conjunc-tion with copper’s processing plastici-ty, has established its dominantposition as a structural element o electric and power-mechanical equip-ment.
