Description

"Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad
is the way that leads to destruction—and many enter through it.
But small is the gate and narrow the way that leads to life—and
only a few find it." Matthew 7:13-14
The second half of Matthew 7 forms the applicatory part of that most
important discourse of our Lord's, known as "the Sermon on the Mount."
One leading design of the Sermon was to show the spiritual nature and
wide extent of that obedience which characterizes the true subjects of
Christ's kingdom, and which obedience is absolutely necessary for the
enjoyment of that ultimate state of blessedness which Divine grace has
provided for them. As the Prophet of God, Christ made known that the
righteousness which obtains in His kingdom greatly exceeds the
"righteousness of the scribes and the Pharisees."

Another excellent choice. One of the best expositions of the Sermon on the Mount for over fifty years now is that by A.W.Pink. I do want to note a word of caution however. Pink is so strong on the requirements of the new life in Christ, and rightfully so. But sometimes he is not equally careful to show that this is not legalism or moralism, something the sinner can attain to by his own boot straps; we must not send the convicted and contrite sinner back to himself to try harder but always make it clear that this is the obedience that springs from faith in Christ himself as our bread from heaven. The Christian life is an impossible life except for the man who is in Christ, and lives by Him and His Holy Spirit. It is all of grace because it is all of Christ alone.
