Kenneth Boulding’s Population Growth Theorems:“The Dismal Theorem”
If the only ultimate check on the growth of population is miseryand starvation;then the population will grow until it is miserable enough to stop its growth.
“The Utterly Dismal Theorem”
This theorem states that any technical improvement can only relieve misery fora while, for so long as misery is the only check on population, the [technical]improvement will enable population to grow, and will soon enable more peopleto live in misery than before. The final result of [technical] improvements,therefore, is to increase the equilibrium population which is to increase thetotal sum of human misery.
“Moderately Cheerful Form of the Dismal Theorem”:
If something else, other than misery and starvation, can be found which willkeep a prosperous population in check, the population does not have to growuntil it is miserable and starves, and it can be stably prosperous.Boulding continues with ‘Until we know more, the Cheerful Theorem remains aquestion mark. Misery and starvation we know will do the trick, and is the onlysure fire automatic method of bringing population to an equilibrium. …. Who benefits from the Silence on the issues of Population and EconomicGrowth’?According to the Sixth Law of Sustainability: The benefits of population growthand growth of the rates of consumption of resources (economic growth) accrueto a few; the costs of population growth and rate of consumption of resources(economic growth) are borne by all of society. Furthermore:A) Individuals who benefit from economic and population growth willcontinue to exert strong pressures supporting and encouraging bothpopulation growth and growth in rates of consumption of resources.B) The individuals who promote growth are motivated by the recognitionthat growth is good for them. In order to gain public support for theirgoals, they mustconvince people that population growth and growth inthe rates of consumption of resources, are also good for society.

When last did you hear a politician worry about ‘economic growth’; and whenlast did you hear that politician tell you that ‘economic growth’
requires
:A)Population growth (more consumers);B)An increase (growth)in the rate of consumption of resources (namely agrowth in the consumption of all resources from water, to arable land,to energy, to food; all of which are the inputs to the ‘consumerproducts’, etc)?But you may think –perhaps politicians don’t know that population growthcauses crime, violence and destabilized communities and nations; perhaps theyare just ignorant.
