Affiliate Marketing - Part 2: Choosing a ProgramI briefly touched on how to choose an affiliate program to promote in Part 1 ofthis series. However, since it's such an important aspect of affiliate marketingI would like to provide you more details on choosing the right program. Here aresome questions you should ask before joining any affiliate program.Does it cost anything to join?I touched on this in Part 1 but it's so important I think it needs repeating. There are thousands and thousands of free affiliate programs to choose from sothere is absolutely no reason to join one that you have to pay for.How and how often commissions paid? This is information you can find out usually on the affiliate signup page. You'llfind that there are a lot of different answers to this question. Some programspay by check. Some pay you by using Paypal or some other payment processingservice. Some programs will offer several payment options and you can choose theone that appeals to you the most. The other thing you will want to learn is how often commissions are paid. Again, this is something that varies from one program to another. You can find programsthat will pay as often as weekly but some may only pay monthly or even less often.Another thing that affects how often some programs pay is the fact that theyimpose minimum commission levels that you have to reach before commissions will bepaid to you. These minimums can range anywhere from $10 to $100 or more. Youshould definitely consider these things before you join a program because if youare just getting started you may need to receive your commissions as quickly aspossible so you can use that money to add to your promotion methods. What is the programs conversion rate?

Conversion rate, if you don't already know, is a measurement of how many visitorsto a sales page actually make a purchase based on a specific number of visitors. For example, lets say a sales page receives 1,000 visitors and 10 of thosevisitors make a purchase. That would equal a conversion rate of 1%. Naturally, the higher the conversion rate is the more appealing the program should be to youbecause all other things being equal you will make more commissions from a programwith a higher conversion rate. Unfortunately conversion rate is not something allaffiliate programs offer but if they do you should definitely make thatinformation a part of your decision process concerning which affiliate program tochoose. How are referrals from your affiliate link tracked and for how long? The most common way affiliate links are tracked is by using a cookie that isplaced in your referral's browser when they click your affiliate link. This is awidely used method and works very well in most cases. The main thing to look foris how long that cookie will remain attached to your affiliate ID. As with mostthings pertaining to affiliate programs, this is something that varies greatlywith different programs. You will find cookie tracking that ranges anywhere fromone day to lifetime tracking with the average being in the 30 - 90 day range.Again, this is something very important to find out when choosing an affiliateprogram. What is the program's reputation?
