BACKGROUND
 NCLR (National Council of La Raza), the largest national Latino civil rights and advocacy organization in the U.S., seeks an Intern for its Communications Department. This position provides support to the entire department, including the digital media team and the Office of Media Relations. The intern will assist the digital media team with outreach on social media platforms and the media relations team in communicating with reporters. This includes preparing for and staffing press events, helping to research news stories and key issue areas, and assisting with all communications projects. Qualified candidates should be enrolled in a journalism, communications, public relations or public affairs program, or one that indicates interest in the Latino community in the U.S. A qualified candidate will have good organizational, administrative and research skills, self-initiative, and the ability to follow through on projects from beginning to end and to work cooperatively with all NCLR staff. This position is an excellent opportunity for individuals interested in entering the field of communications. Bilingual ability is a plus.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
 
Providing support with the research and compilation of news clips for specific NCLR releases, issue areas and press events
 
Researching print, radio, online and TV news outlets and updating media contact database
 
Providing general and logistical support in planning internal and external meetings with media
 
Maintaining a record of media requests, if assistance is needed with this
 
Assisting with posting on Facebook and Twitter, under the supervision of the digital media staff
 
Strengthening the content on the NCLR blog by helping to write posts on various issues
 
Assembling specialized media kits for NCLR press conferences and other public events
 
Performing routine administrative tasks such as photocopying, record-keeping, reserving meeting rooms, etc. in a systematic way
 
Supporting staff with work plan implementation and performing other support duties deemed necessary and appropriate
QUALIFICATIONS
 
Strong writing skills
 
Strong sense of responsibility, self-motivation, and a positive attitude
 
Problem-solving skills
 
Can work well both independently and with a team
 
Familiarity with Microsoft programs (e.g., Word, Outlook, and Excel)
 
Some knowledge of social media platforms (i.e. Facebook, Twitter) and blogging platforms (i.e. Wordpress)
 
Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail and deadlines
 
Professional telephone manner and verbal communication skills
 
Ability to work effectively under time constraints
 
Working knowledge of office equipment
