ad and I worked a lot together on a large ranch, caring for the cattle, haying and such. We had to re-build a corral one winter. We had the time between the usual other chores and the corral was getting in rough shape. Since it was pretty cold, we wore heavy coats and gloves, earflaps, and the usual silk neckerchiefs around our necks. Mine was longer than the standard ones, which wrap around your neck twice, with just enough left to tie a square knot leaving the ends a couple inches or so in length. It wasnt long enough

I had a cold and was coughing quite a bit. In the middle of a coughing spell, the wind whipped one end of my silk scarf over my mouth. I sucked in a big breath and the end of the silk wildrag. I couldnt get enough air to breath, holler or squeak. Lad was trimming the end of a pole with a chain saw, so he wouldnt have been able to hear me anyway. I could just imagine the headlines of the local paper, Local man chokes on his own scarf. It struck me funny as I was trying to pull it out of my throat. All of the hands on the

ranch were CPR certified and had just finished the course. I dont think Lad would be good at CPR. He looked up at me, pulling silk out of my trachea and began chuckling. I could hear his laughter over the sound of the chainsaw. The more he laughed the harder he squeezed the gas feed and the louder the motor got. I got the neckerchief out of my throat okay and we both had a good laugh at the situation, but I knew Id better tell the story to the other cowboys first, or he would make it even more embarrassing.
