INTRODUCTION
Industries are the drivers of economy of acountry. They provide goods & services,employment opportunities & provide for thegrowth of the nation’s economy. Since ancienttimes, especially from the days of Britisher’s, theemphasis on industrial development has been verysignificant. Mahatma Gandhi encouraged thedomestic industry by launching the swadeshimovement. Industries like handloom, khadi, coir,pottery, handicrafts etc. have been there for a longtime in our history.India is a country with lakhs of village & aneconomy based on rural earning. Therefore, thedevelopment of these villages was considered veryimportant, especially during post independenceperiod. Hence, special attention was paid to thegrowth &development of industries located invillage. This growth could be achieved onlythrough the development of the cottage &handloom industries &other villages basedindustries. Hence, the need for co-operativeorganization was realized which would help bringall people together to achieve their commonobjective of self-development. Thus, industrial co-operative were formed.An industrial co-operative is an association of workers & craftsmen involved in cottage or villageindustries, who come together to undertakecollective production, processing & marketing of goods manufactured by the members & providethem with the necessary services & assistance.

Industrial co-operative can be defined as ‘Aco-operative organized by workers, controlled byworker & managed by workers for meeting theircommon purpose’. Thus, an industrial co-operative is anassociation of workers, wherein all activities areundertaken by the workers and is formed purely tobenefit them, socially and economically.
Role of Industrial Co-operatives
 The role of co-operatives in the sphere of industrial development has been recognised. Anaverage industrial worker, particularly in ruralareas, does not possess sufficient capital forinstalling improved type of machinery. Apart fromthis, he requires raw material and working capitalfor running his unit. After production of goods,their sale at such prices as can bring adequatereturn to the worker, is equally essential. In short,credit, raw material and marketing of finished godsare three important requirements of an industrialworker. The best solution of these difficultiesseems to be organisation of co-operatives oindustrial workers. It provides two distinctadvantages : requisite facilities by the Governmentand the pooling of capital and skill.  The industrial co-operative movement hasmade considerable progress in the district. Theindustrial co-operatives governing hosiery goodsare the most organised and 90 per cent of the

production of hosiery co-operatives in the countryis from Ludhiana. The other co-operative of notecover cycle-parts, sewing-machine parts, etc.
Aims and Objectives
 The main objectives of forming a co-operative can be classified into two main types,i.e., the social and economic objectives. Whileforming an industrial co-operative, the memberswill have certain social and economic objectives. These objectives are:

Social Aim:
Social Aim is to safeguardworkers interest and to protect them fromexploitation by the capitalist and the traders. Thus the social aim is to render services to themembers as well as the society.

Economic Aim :
 The second aim isEconomical, which focuses mainly on creationof employment. There is lot of disguisedunemployment and many layoff stages for theworker in a year. This spare time can be madeproductive due to the industrial co-operatives.
