Abstract: Population structure and environmental relationships of the tropical tree
Nectandra rudis
(Lauraceae), a rare species in western Mexico.
The tree
N. rudis
s a rare speces from western Mexco of whch communty and populaton features are unknown. We studed a populaton n an alttudnal gradent, from 550-1 850 m above sea level n the Serra de Manantlan, Jalsco, Mexco. We establshed four 60x48 msample stes at vertcal dstances of 100 m along ths alttudnal gradent. Wthn each plot, ten 100 m

crcular sub-samplng unts were randomly located. At each unt, we recorded dameter at breast heght (dbh) and tree
height for all woody vegetation ≥2.5 cm dbh. Basal area, tree density, frequency, species richness and importance
values per speces and plot. We estmated the vertcal structure (total tree heght) and dameter( as M=5log

ndvduals. A drect ordnaton through Canoncal Correspondence Analyss was done, nvolv-ng amongst other speces, edaphc and envronmental data matrces. The record of 44
N. rudis
ndvduals, nseven out the 56 plots sampled, represents the most septentronal record for the speces and the frst n WesternMexco. its densty and basal area represented 4.5 % and 8.7 % respectvely of the total estmated for the com-munty. The greatest mportance values were observed at 1 650 m above sea level. The populaton structure of
N.rudis
s structured nto fve dameter categores n an nverse “J” shaped dstrbuton. Ths s a typcal behavor observed to occur n the Lauraceae, whch produces bg seeds of short vablty that germnate when there shgh sol mosture content. The speces tend to form dense seedlng banks although only a reduced number of them are able to survve. Speces rchness vares from 27 to 39 at plot level; the greatest mportance values for the plots on whch

was found, corresponds to
Urera verrucosa
(Lebm.) V.W. Stenm.,
N. rudis
,
Ficus
sp.,
Beilschmiedia manantlanensis
Cuevas y Cochrane, amongst others. Canoncal Correspondence Analysssuggests that envronmental varables such as rooted trees, crown cover, ltter depth and soluble magnesum arethe more sgnfcant explanatory varables for the dstrbuton and abundance of

Nectandra
