Meadville TribuneCampaign allegations target courthouse policiesDate: September 4, 2009 The head of Crawford County’s Democratic Party wants to know the county’s policy oncounty employees campaigning within the confines of the Crawford CountyCourthouse.In a letter to Morris Waid, chairman of the county commissioners, JimSchlosser alleges Fred Wagner, county treasurer, was passing out election material forWagner’s re-election campaign inside the treasurer’s office at the courthouse.Schlosser is chairman of the county’s Democratic Party while Wagner is a Republican.Wagner is running for re-election as county treasurer this November against DemocratBrad Cronin.Schlosser wrote the letter after being advised on Monday, Aug. 31, that electioneeringmay be going on in the treasurer’s office. On Friday night, Schlosser declined to revealwho gave him that information.“On or about 3:00 p.m., on that date, I entered the office of the treasurer to validatethis situation. After conversing with the clerks and Mr. Wagner regarding the availabilityof the electioneering material I did leave with a business card, bumper sticker and yardsign,” Schlosser wrote.Wagner was out of town Friday and unavailable for comment.In published reports Friday, Wagner said campaign materials had just been delivered tohis office and he was about to take them home. Wagner also said Schlosser had askedfor the sign he was given.Chuck Swick, Wagner’s campaign manager, also was unavailable for comment Friday.“As a county taxpayer I am extremely disturbed by this activity,” Schlosser wrote.“Allowing county employees to work on a political campaign during working hours whilebeing paid by county tax payers is an insult to all tax payers, is tantamount to stealingfrom the county and certainly should not be permitted. Hopefully this is not the countypolicy.”Contacted Friday, Commissioner Waid said the county doesn’t have a clear policy onelectioneering.“We discourage it,” Waid said.
