U.S. History - Classroom Lecture: July 4, 1776, the Second Continental Congress approves the Declaration of Independence. George Washington takes charge of the Continental Army. Initially, his rag-tag troops are no match for the British army. After General John Burgoyne surrenders at Saratoga, the war begins to turn in favor of the Americans. With the signing of the Treaty of Paris, in 1783, the United States of America is completely free of British rule.
