SENATOR OBRIEN PROMOTES ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITIES FOR MILITARY VETERANS

ROCHESTER, N.Y. Senator Ted OBrien today called for 5 percent of all state contracts to be set aside for veterans with disabilities. The "Jobs for Heroes" Act, S.2803-B, was introduced by Senator Greg Ball, Chairman of the Veterans, Homeland Security and Military Affairs committee, and mirrors a similar federal measure that has been in place since 2004. Currently, New York is one of several states without similar provisions. Our nations service members risk their lives to defend our country and we must ensure they have the tools they require to succeed when they return to civilian life, Senator OBrien said. Bringing New York in-line with the federal government and ensuring that injured veterans are afforded opportunities for business success is not only the right thing to do, it is the right economic thing to do. The State Senate hosted hearings and invited veterans with service-connected disabilities to Albany to testify about their intentions to start or expand small businesses in New York State. These veterans and experts were asked to discuss their experiences under current state regulations and provide suggestions on ways state government can improve economic opportunities. The Jobs for Heroes Act is a common sense piece of legislation that will have real and meaningful impact for the men and women throughout New York State who have fought to protect our way of life," Senator O'Brien said. "We owe our wounded warriors more than we can ever repay and I urge my colleagues to pass this legislation as soon as possible." -30Sen.
