Preface
It is my hope that you, the reader, will enjoy reading this book as much as I enjoyed writing it.
It has taken over 24 years of research to complete. True, 21 of those years were spent living life while only 3 years were actually spent in its compellation. It is a non-fiction work whose sole purpose is not only to inform and entertain, but also to make one probe into the recesses of their minds for the happiest moments in their youth. It is a means of escape. It is hoped that it will bring back memories to the reader that have long been suppressed.
While this book is about experiences in a small resort area located on the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada mountain range in California, it could be any location across the globe where youth comes of age.
Did everything you wrote about really happen as you say it did?
; What you remember of Pinecrest is not what I remember
. These are questions and comments that were posted in the guest book on my website during the writing and research of this book.
Why is it then, that two (or more) people can experience the same event at the same time, or for that matter similar events in the same environment, even at different times, and have different recollections of what actually took place? Or maybe didn’t take place? Confusing? Read on…
There has been a plethora of research on the subject of memory fluctuations and loss. One such explanation might be the natural process of aging and decay of the brain, known as transience
. Another might be misattribution
, which is believing you have seen something you haven’t. Yet another might be suggestibility
, which is the incorporation of misinformation into memory due to leading questions, deception, or other causes. Even absent-mindedness
, which usually occurs when so many things are happening at once that your main focus prevents you from giving the proper attention to everything else. It makes you give second thoughts to the benefits of multi-tasking
, which may be beneficial to computers, but may have detrimental effects in humans. In my case, I think I am experiencing all of these symptoms at once!
Now that we completely understand what it is I am trying to say, or what I didn’t say but meant to if I remember correctly, we must move on to a time and place that exists, or at least used to exist not only in our minds but in actuality as well. I think.
I had one reader remark that Pinecrest is magical. It is timeless. It is the one last place on earth where summer love still comes true generation after generation
. Perhaps I was under a misconception that the Pinecrest of today does not hold the magical allure
that was so apparent in the past. It appears that the magic might still exist even though there are no longer nightly bonfires on the beach, nor the organized dances that brought us together in the hopes of meeting that one true
summer love. I have come to the conclusion that it must be the overall beauty of the area alone that awakens all our senses and creates those everlasting memories.
A final note: All the names of actual persons except politicians and the author have been changed to protect the innocent and guilty alike.

Chapter I--History of Pinecrest
After all the years I spent growing up in Pinecrest, I never knew the history of the area, or how it came to be named, until I started doing research for this book. I do remember when the name was changed from Strawberry Lake to Pinecrest Lake in 1960, but why, when or how, was a mystery. I also always thought that it was called Strawberry Lake because the lake itself was shaped like a strawberry.
Much of the data I was able to collect came from a booklet written by Carl T. Fisher (1977) titled "Pinecrest, Past and
