repository. Fort Douglas already houses Camp Floyds archeological collection and now all the materials are together in one place. Our hope is to attract a graduate research student to do zooarchological research on the faunal remains to learn more about Camp Floyd. We recently completed an exhibit on Capitan Tracys sketches. Tracy was an excellent artist and sketched many scenes on his way to and at Camp Floyd. Last year, we found the approximant location of four of his sketches and took photographs. Each sketch is paired with a photo of the same view in present day. Looking at the same areas then and now, you can see the same mountains and small changes in the landscape overtime. Come see the new exhibit at Camp Floyd! If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me at MeganKeller@utah.gov or (801) 768-8932. By: Megan Keller

The winter can be slow for visitation at Camp Floyd, but we are hard at work planning for the spring and summer. This winter we are focusing on collections, new programs, grants, and exhibits. Camp Floyd has over about 140 boxes of faunal remains from the archeological digs at Camp Floyd in the 80s and 90s. These are mostly cow bones, but also include the remains of birds and other small mammals. Through studying these remains, archeologists can determine not only what the soldiers ate at Camp Floyd, but how the animals were butchered. Previously, these boxes were stored at the Utah State Parks north region office. Some were even stored in garbage bags. Camp Floyd received money from the state to rehouse these items into boxes and we moved them to Fort Douglas Military Museums

These boxes of faunal bone are now housed at Fort Douglas.

During the winter months, Park Manager Mark Trotter often makes items at Camp Floyds woodshop for the park. Currently, he is working on a writing desk which will be used for Johnstons Army Adventure Camp this spring. The new desk will hold a quill and ink and allow boy scouts to signup for the army.

Programs Coming to Camp Floyd

Camp Floyd is hosting a Murder Mystery Afternoon on March 1st. Participants will start by playing the same games the soldiers played like Faro, Chuck-a-luck, and three-card monte to win double eagle chocolate coins. After a fake murder occurs, participants will work together to uncover the culprit.

On April 5th at 10am, we will have our second Quest of the Pony Express. The 5k run will reenact the ride from Camp Floyd to St. Joseph, Missouri and back. Registration will start in early February. Visit Campfloyd.utah.gov to register and find more information.

Camp Floyd Abroad or Parlez-vous Franais?

Camp Floyd State Park has a standard eBay alert on Camp Floyd items just in case anything were to pop up on the online auction site. Its always good to be prepared! The other day we purchased an engraving of an image of Camp Floyd from Bucharest, Romaina produced for a French publication called Le Tour Du Monde. Published in 1862, its exciting to imagine an international audience learning about Camp Floyd so soon after its closure. Although we do not currently have a translation, the article is peppered with words relating to the location and soliders stationed at Camp Floyd. Do you speak French? Translating computer programs can only do so much and wed love your help to translate the article. E-mail MeganKeller@utah.gov for more information.

This is a low-quality copy of the image Camp Floyd recently purchased on ebay from Romania. Friends of Camp Floyd is a not for profit 501c(3) in this historic location.
