With God's help, we republish the Patriarchal and Synodical Encyclical Letter which the Great Church of Constantinople delivered in 1895, in reply to the Encyclical of Pope Leo XIII concerning union.
We pray that the present edition will help primarily the Orthodox clerics, but also the faithful people of God (the guardian of our Faith) to understand clearly that between our Holy Orthodox Catholic and Apostolic Church and the Latin Church «a great chasm has been fixed» (Lk 16:26). We also think that its publication is very timely, coming just after the recent betrayal of our Orthodox Faith by some priests and bishops who have given Holy Communion to papist priests.
Archimandrite Eustathios Metallinos, of blessed memory, translated the Encyclical Letter into English and published it in 1895.
