Credit for Good Cents
Fall has been blowing in with determination for the last week. All the best of this summer was concen-trated in September but now, Fall is saying that it’s time to get indoors and tackle the domestic choresagain. Paperwork. It’s about that time when the credit card statements arrive with pesky little noticesattached. That’s enough to pique my interest.Credit cards are so much a part of our daily lives now that we hardly give them any extra attention. Weuse them like a second income or an extended line of credit. Use them, pay them something and usethem again, and again, and again. They’re handy, quick, easy and colourful. Who has just one of themanymore? We usually have a few, some of us have several. How many of us look closely at them? Ilooked at mine only briefly the other day and it made me wonder. If GICs are paying not quite .50% per year, why is the rate on the average credit card about 19.5%?That’s quite a difference. Hasn’t anyone told these boys there’s a recession on? These rates applyequally to customers with excellent as well as fair credit ratings. Mortgage rates are down to about3.75% for a year but the credit card biz hasn’t adjusted at all. The banks offer a huge variety of perkswith these cards but they aren’t of much economic value unless you are clever enough to use a no feecard and pay the balance off every single month. If you can do that then any interest rate they apply isirrelevant. You’re free riding on the system and, good on you. However, lots of us make monthly payments. Now the rates really matter. A little notice from onegroup disclosed that payments are applied to finance charges and fees first. They’re then applied to pur-chase, balance transfer and cash advance segments of the account from lowest to highest annual interestrate. When paying the minimum payment, whichever segment of the balance has the lowest annual inter-est rate will be paid first. The only way to beat this is to pay more than the minimum payment eachmonth. It reminds me of John Henry, poor man, owing his soul to the company store.MBNA is one of the companies that call relentlessly to sign me up for credit cards. They’re cards aver-age 17.99% to 19.99%. They’re owned by Bank of America, that excellent institution that needed a $45Billion US bailout from the American government. The CEO has just resigned and will have to settle for$53 Million US in retirement pension benefits. I don’t understand why I’m the high risk individual inthis scenario. The only way to protect yourself is to examine what you’re really getting for what you’re paying. Thereare low rate credit cards available without annual fee. They aren’t often advertised but are worth askingfor. The dollars saved make sense and all of them are yours. Astronomy on the Edge
Named after the Roman God known as Zeus inGermany, the planet Jupiter technically has nosurface as it is entirely made out of gas. Jupitercan be seen without a telescope because of itshuge size. The gravitational pull of the planet isso high that anything and everything that passesthe planets gets pulled towards it. Jupiter has 63moons and one of them is volcanically activeand it is the only moon in the entire universe tobe in such a state. The fastest spinning planet of all, Jupiter has clouds that are up to 50 km thick and the average day on Jupiter lasts around 10hours. After Venus, Jupiter is the second bright-est planet in the Solar System (Venus reflects70% of sunlight). Mars outshines Jupiter onlywhen approached very close to the Earth. Inter-esting Fact is that Jupiter emits weird sounds orso called "electromagnetic voices" recorded byNASA-Voyager.
