WELCOME TO THE 2009 MASSACHUSETTS POETRY FESTIVAL
To all the friends of poetry:
Welcome to the 2nd Annual Massachuses Poetry Festival – andwelcome to historic Lowell, a hot spot of the “creative economy” inthe Commonwealth. You are part of the “great audience” for poetrythat Whitman imagined so many years ago. In one year, the Festivalhas made an enormous developmental leap. Writers from Boston tothe Berkshires ignited literary res to start the Festival on the Thurs

In this program book you will seethe packed schedule for Friday and Saturday in Lowell, as well theSunday activities at the Children’s Museum and Harvard University. Our theme this year is “Poetry in Hard Times.” Let’s hope thepower of poetry can take us beyond the “hard times” for four days.We are intent on having a good time together and carrying that spirit
forward.
While you are in Lowell, please explore the city when you move between events. You can sample food from around the world indowntown restaurants, visit Whistler’s birthplace, see extraordinarycommemorative sculptures for Jack Kerouac and Lucy Larcom, wit
