The area covered for the purpose of datacollection & planning by a transportation study.
An imaginary line enclosing the wholestudy area.
For the purpose of data collection & aggregation, the area under study within the cordon line is subdividedinto smaller internal traffic areas called zones. Zones mustmeet the following requirements.
They should be compatible with past or projectedstudies of the region or adjacent region.
They should be areas of similar land-use & other trip-making characteristics.
They should be reasonable in size & number.
They should be commensurate with district boundaries, population census areas and/or local authorityboundaries.
Wherever possible, they should contain principaltransport network nodes at or near the centroid.
The zone in which a trip begins.
The zone in which a trip terminates(ends).
A trip is a one-way movement between an origin & adestination, independent of length or distance, without anysignificant stop, except the time spent, during the transfer ormode. It is conducted for a specific purpose as shown inFigure.
A trip with both origin and destinationin the same zone.
A trip traveling between two differentzones.
