Newspaper scavenger hunt Give your child a list of things to find in today's newspaper. Here are some ideas: A map of the United States. A picture of your child's favorite athlete. The temperature in the city where a family member lives. Three words that begin with "w". A movie that is playing at a nearby theater.

Specialists Showtime! Poetry Stories Dates to Remember

Don't stop reading to your children as they grow older. You will both enjoy the chance to do something together. Make sure your children read every day. Reading - like shooting baskets and playing the piano - is a skill. Like other skills, it gets better with practice. Researchers have found that children who spend at least 30 minutes a day reading for fun - whether they read books, newspapers, or magazines - develop the skills to be better readers at school. Instead of giving chocolates this month, how about a book relating to Valentines Day.

February is the time of the year when we are encouraged to take care of ourselves by taking care of our hearts. Students in Physical Education classes are participating in the American Heart Associations - Jump Rope for Heart. This annual event takes place in all four of our elementary schools, to raise money to help fight against our Nations No. 1 and No. 3 killerscardiovascular diseases and stroke. Please see the newsletter page with more details concerning this event and worthy cause.

During physical education classes for grades 3, 4, and 5, we will be holding a Jump Rope for Heart Event. These events are held nationwide and help students learn about the benefits of regular physical activity and heart health while they raise funds to support vital research and educational programs. If you choose to participate, friends and family are welcome to support your child by making contributions. We ask that children do not go door to door or ask strangers for donations. To help your child raise money the fun and easy way, you are encouraged to use the online fund-raising tool found at heart.org/jump and click on Students Sign Up. After you have completed raising money on line, print your childs online donation report and include it inside the collection envelope. Please do not send cash or coins. All checks should be made payable to the American Heart Association. All contributions need to be returned to school by February 14, 2014. Thank you for your continued support!

Stories from Mrs. OBriens Classroom

Rudolphs Nutty Nose By: Lauren Short One snowy day, Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer had a very BIG problem! He was playing with his other reindeer friends, and then went for a walk in the forest. He went on and on and on. He got really hungry. At the end of the forest, Rudolph found a blackberry bush. He ate a lot of blackberries. After the bush was completely empty, Rudolph went back to his reindeer friends. He said, Look at my nose! Look! Its purple! Rudolph was thinking about what he could do. Suddenly he got an idea. I will take a bath. He took a hot bath. After he was done taking a bath, his nose turned back to red. Now Rudolph knows not to eat blackberries. He does not want this to happen again! So he decided that all he was going to eat, was red apples. The Three Little Puppies and the Big Bad Cat By: Jacob Gunderson Once upon a time, there were three colorful frogs. Their names were Bob, Bob, and Bob. Then there was a big, bad snake. The Bobs built houses out of straw, sticks, and flowers. The snake blew the normal houses down, but then he smelled the house of flowers. He loved it! So the frogs and snake became best friends, and they lived happily ever after!

The Three Little Orangutans and the Big Bat Gorilla By: Lukas Barney Once upon a time there were three little orangutans. All of the orangutans lived in a banana house. Then the big, bad Gorilla came and smells the house. He is in love with the house! He says, If I get free bananas, I will leave you alone forever. Okay, they said. And they all lived happily ever after.

Eek! Theres a Mouse in My Desk! By: Maryellen Moore One morning, I went to school. I sat on my chair and took out my binder. Suddenly I realized my page was only half there. What was going on? After a while, I found a mouse! EEK! Theres a mouse in my desk! At first I was scared, but then I decided to take him home as a pet. At last I finally got a pet!
