Therefore, since it is by God's mercy that we are engaged in this ministry, we do not lose heart (2 Corinthians 4:1 NRSV). In the 1960s Rev. John Chironna, then Pastor and now Pastor Emeritus of Central Presbyterian Church, encouraged the church to take on a pre-school ministry. A dedicated group of our members accepted that challenge, beginning a ministry here that for more than forty years (without interruption, except for once while the church was under renovation) has served children from underprivileged backgrounds. This has been our churchs most visible, hands-on, local mission. However, after advertising the position in the newspaper and online, and after telephoning a number of potential referral sources, the Pre-School Committee has been unable to find a teacher with the right qualifications to replace our long-term and beloved teacher, Gayle Wilson, who recently announced her retirement. The committee members, who are the primary volunteers for this ministry, decided that, in order to begin a new class of children in the fall of 2013, a teacher and a volunteer school director would need to be located no later than July 1. As I write this article, it is clear that these positions will not be filled. Therefore, we will not be able to offer the pre-school this year. In the words of the Apostle Paul, however, we do not lose heart. Often when we encounter difficulties in ministry, those very challenges guide the way to changes that are necessary for the ministry to remain vital. The world has changed a lot since the 1960s. There may be more competition now than there was before. Other pre-schools are a part of full-day programs, which may better fit the needs of families with both parents working outside the home (the current norm). Our difficulty finding a qualified teacherespecially one with a bachelors degree and a certification in early childhood educationmay relate to the fact that our position was only part-time. Nor do we know what the future may hold: Indiana lawmakers continue to discuss universal public pre-school education. In short, in order to remain vital, our mission to serve children may need to expand or change. Or our congregation may decide that we now feel called to serve our community in other ways. Over the course of the next year or so, I expect that we will have opportunities to explore and identify the ministries to which God is calling us. I encourage us prayerfully to begin thinking about this question now. After spending a chapter listing many of the sociological, economic, governmental, and philosophical changes in the world that undermine the way we have done church in the past, respected author Peter Steinke concludes this way: Faced with a strange, new world, the church is challenged to be true to its purpose and attuned to its context. I believe the paradigm shift of rapid change constitutes a rich opportunity for the church. God has set the door open to the future [my emphasis; Revelation 3:8]. Gods future arrives in the person of Jesus Christ. The churchs response to Gods restoration of the whole creation through Jesus is the vocation to which we are called. Lets walk through the door.
