Peacemaking Offering to be received October 6.

Jesus reminds us that Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God (Matthew 5:9). The theme this year is Peace at all times in all ways based on 2 Thessalonians 3:16. Jesus calls us to be peacemakers. We see this every day as we experience our worlds need for Christs reconciling love, peace and justice. The promise of Jesus is both a comfort and a challenge. It reminds us that the path of peace is something we both follow and forge. Central will be receiving this offering on World Communion Sunday. Make this year a time to renew your commitment to peacemaking as part of your calling as a follower of Christ, who not only taught us the ways of peace but is our peace.

First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you, . . . . (Romans 1:8 NRSV) Every time August rolls around, I think back to my first August with you in Terre Haute, eight years ago! Pastoral ministry was so completely new back then. I remember wondering how I could ever do it. Through the years the answer has been clear: I could never do italone. Yet you have been good teachers. My first day on the job the Presbyterian Monday Stitchers suggested an important home visit for me to make. Sarah and Cheryl have been very patient with me as I have gradually learned the routines and folkways of this congregation, often steering me away from potential disaster. Teachers, fellow students, and co-workers at Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary, long before Amanda and I had ever heard of Terre Haute Central, laid the foundation for our ministry among you. I say our because we never would have left Birmingham if it had not been for Amandas (and Lees) willingness to allow me to switch careers and to accompany me to Louisville yet another example of how I could not have done this alone. You all have responded so graciously to me that I know the Holy Spirit is working among you. You are forgiving, cooperative, energetic, generous, intelligent, and loving. I have felt your acceptance from the very first. God has blessed our efforts together, and I am convinced that there are many more blessings ahead. A new academic year is beginning, and this year will be busyjust like the last eight! In November the Worship Commission will be introducing us to the new Presbyterian Hymnal, Glory to God. The Session continues to consider how best to lead us in the next round of long-term planning for our congregation, which will probably begin this year. This fall we finish implementing our technology grant from the Center for Congregations, which will include a new look for our website and the adoption of some very mission-oriented software from Meet the Need, a national nonprofit religious organization. The Seventh Cents Youth Group continues to develop and grow under the leadership of Tiffany Grossman and the Youth Design Team. There are other projects in the works, too. Stay tuned! I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you. Thank you for trusting me to minister among you in the name of Jesus. Please keep praying for me, as I will for you. And lets keep having fun in ministry.
