HERE AT THE CAPJOURNAL
we are always keen to nd new ways o disseminatingavailable astronomy education and public outreach (EPO) resources.Wearing my International Year o Astronomy 2009 hat, I need to nd new ways o re-usingthe resources available to our IYA2009 partners and ensure that they are available to othernations and organisations. We see IYA2009 as a huge opportunity to empower networksand to exploit all available material.I we could count the number o astronomy EPO resources available on the web, ourminds would be blown by the enormous number o terabytes out there — many morethan the data rom the Hubble Space Telescope.Unortunately, these resources are not easy to translate or adapt to dierent languagesand cultures. Principally because either the original materials were not developed withportability in mind, or the source les are simply not available.Imagine a website where anyone can download, access, reuse, recycle and adapt con-tent to dierent languages and cultures. The rst steps torwards this have come romSpain, where a group o acionados are translating and adapting electronic EPO contentinto Spanish using proessionally minded volunteers. The network astroseti.org trans-lates and adapts news, documents, brochures, educational material and presentations, specically to promote and disseminate astronomy. This group are setting an exampleto ollow! The IYA2009 Cornerstone, the Portal to the Universe, hopes to continue theireorts and is attempting to ll this niche.CAPjournal is protected by a Creative Commons License, which enables you to copy, distribute and transmit the content under certain conditions, such as or non-commercialproposes. So we practice what we preach! In this issue, Mathew McCool, Proessor o Writing at the Southern Polytechnic SU(Atlanta, USA) provides tips on how to avoid cultural and linguistic tangles in astronomycommunication. Also be sure to check out the articles on achieving high levels o mediacoverage, the upcoming Venus-Jupiter conjunction and what journalists really think aboutscientists...Between issues you can stay in touch through our website, www.capjournal.org, whereyou will nd the current issue in PDF ormat, a job bank, submission guidelines and backissues. You can also post anything you have to say on the site or e-mail me at editor@capjournal.org. I’d like to know what you think!Happy reading,Pedro Russo
