resident’s Day is anAmerican holiday that iscelebrated each year on thethird Monday in February. Schoolchildren typically get the day off from school and many profession-als also get the day off from work.Established in 1800,President’s Day once went by adifferent name. Known asWashington’s Birthday, which isstill the legal name of the holiday,this day was meant to celebratethe first President of the UnitedStates, George Washington,whose birthday was February 22.Congress declared that day a fed-eral holiday more than 200 yearsago, and eventually the holidaygrew to become a celebration of President Abraham Lincoln, whowas born on February 12, as well.The holiday is now a celebrationof the lives and accomplishmentsof every U.S. president.Few Americans would behard-pressed to identify GeorgeWashington’s visage, which isdepicted on some American cur-rency, including the $1 bill. Bornin 1732 to Virginia planters,Washington’s interests includedwestern expansion, which he wasable to take part as a teenager,helping to survey the Shenandoahlands at the age of 16.Washington was also interested inmilitary arts, and he was commis-sioned a lieutenant colonel in1754, eventually playing a role inwhat became the French andIndian War.In 1759, Washington wasserving in the Virginia House of Burgesses, an assembly of electedrepresentatives of the Englishcolonies in North America.Growing frustrated with, and feel-ing exploited by, British regula-tions, Washington voiced hisresistance to restrictions placedon colonists, who were movingtoward what would become theAmerican Revolution.At the Second ContinentalCongress, which assembled in1775, Washington was electedCommander-in-Chief of theContinental Army, taking com-mand of troops at Cambridge,Massachusetts on July 3, 1775.Under Washington’s com-mand, the Continental Armywould ultimately succeed, win-ning the colonists their independ-
