Director’s Corner
October is already here and schedules are becoming very busy!!! We have quite a few
events planned for this month. Besides field trips for both the school age children and the pre-
school, we are also having our second Parent’s Night Out on October 23. The prices have been
lowered.......only $20 per child and $35 for siblings. Our first Potluck of the year on Thursday, October 29th.
Please make sure to look out for a sign up on the door for our potluck which will be held in the West Wood-
land Cafeteria. There will be a ton of delicious food and amazing entertainment presented by our preschool-
ers as well as artwork and projects on display from the school agers.

I am happy to announce that Jay has decided to go back to school and continue his education! We
are all very proud of him and wish him luck. He will still be with us in the afternoons and Erin will be picking
up the morning shift Tuesday through Thursday. Another change in the school age department is that Jesse
will not be with us on Wednesdays due to her class schedule. However, our fantastic sub, Kate, will be filling
in on Wednesdays on top of the usual Mondays. Some of you may see some new faces around as I am in the
process of hiring new subs, so stop and introduce yourself.

I attended the first Safety Committee Meeting of the year at West Woodland. This is a committee
which surveys and evaluates the safety of the school property (inside and out) as well as injury and illness re-
ports between the school and our center. The main focus at this point in the year is the prevention of the flu
and other communicable diseases. Please be sure to have your child wash their hands when entering the
building. Continuing to teach your children to cover their faces when coughing or sneezing with their elbows
will be a great help as well!
Take Care,
Melissa

Panda Posse
The Pandas are having a wonderful time getting to know each other and getting comfort-
able in the Panda room. They took a walking field trip around the neighborhood and spent
time sharing information about themselves, their families and their communities. We were
thrilled to see so many families represented at our Open House, and encourage anyone
who missed it to ask us for an update. We’re always available to answer any questions you
may have, in person, by phone or via email, whatever works best for you. We also hope
you’ll come to our first Kids Inc community potluck of the year on October 29th. The
Pandas and Otters will sing for us and display their original artwork, and the school-age
kids will show us what they have been up to in their afternoon clubs. If you haven’t been to one yet
you’ll be amazed at how much fun they are! The food is always great and the performances are
“soooo cuuuuute”!
We’ve had our first October field trip to the Woodland Park Rose Garden with a surprise
visit to the Zoo on our way back to school. Thank-you to Reese and James’ dads for going with us.
We took the bus up the hill and then walked back through the “secret tunnel” and down the hill.
The Pandas are a great group of hikers and are becoming experienced and safe urban travelers. We
look forward to our trip across the sound and back by ferry on October 15th (this is a change from
the trolley ride that is listed on your field trip schedule) and our visit with the Otters to the Fairbanks
Pumpkin Farm on the 29th. The sign-up sheet is up on the bulletin board for the ferry trip and we
need at least two parents to go with us. Our field trips this month coordinate with our themes of
colors, transportation, spiders and of course pumpkins!
Thanks to all for remembering coats and rain gear - and a gentle reminder to bring in a fam-
ily picture if we don’t have one yet. HAPPY FALL! Gee, Polly and Louie

OTTER’S DEN
Month two has arrived with a chill and our family theme, last month was very suc-
cessful. The family story books ended up to be very cute. The Otters have begun to
learn their last names and how to spell them, but I think they’ll have to have more prac-
tice at home (hint, hint), so continue that encouragement.
This month we’ll be learning about the human body, one of my favorite themes. We’ll learn
about all the different parts of the body and how each body part works. The skin, lungs, heart, brain,
and the digestive system are just a few of the parts we’ll learn about. We’ll also talk about our five
senses, staying healthy, going to the doctor and growing up.
The letters of the week for this month will be D, E, F, and G.
Oh and there’s a certain holiday coming up that most kids really enjoy. We’ll do a few things for
Halloween that include orange and black. We’re also planning a fieldtrip to the pumpkin patch on
Thursday, October 29th with the Pandas. Watch out for more specifics as we get closer to the day.

School Agers-Grizzlies (K-2nd Grades) & King Snakes (3rd-5th Grades)

Fall is upon us and the weather is getting colder as we speak, but we still keep
our fingers crossed for those rainless days! Please make sure your child comes
with appropriate outside gear, because we do live in Seattle and it does rain, the
children still play outside as much as possible.
Our afternoon clubs have begun, and are off to a great start. The children sign up when they
check in afterschool and decide it they want to do a club or not. Then they either go outside and
play or sit down and have snack. The clubs begin at 4:00 and end at 5:00. The club listing and
description on the next page. Thank you for talking with your children about the different club
choices they have.
There is a staffing change for October, Jay will not be doing the morning shift any-
more, and Erin will be taking over on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays. This will
begin on October 13th.
October 9th is an school in-service day, which means no school, but Kids Inc. is open
and we are going to the pumpkin farm. The sign up sheet is on the parent table, and all
school agers at Kids Inc. this day will be going to the pumpkin maze. It’s to Bob’s Corn
Maze in Snohomish, and for $8.00 each child will receive a pumpkin, gourd, hay ride,
maze, and a cow train! Sounds like a ton of fun.
October 29th, is a Thursday and will be our (Kids Inc.) fall Potluck, so mark that down in your
calendar. October 28th, is an early dismissal and the sign up sheet will be on the parent table
two weeks before hand.
Also, extra curricular activates are beginning, so please let us know if your child will be attend-
ing any of these activities (choir, chess club, etc), so we know where they are. Thanks for your
help and please feel free to ask if you have any questions.
