Abstract
GIS offers a powerful tool for providing information to support
decision-making in [sustainable tourism] planning and management, and to
promote integrated management of resources based on sensitivity to their
use and the needs of local communities and visitors. Developments such as
GIS and associated technologies (GPS, remote sensing, etc.) are seen as a
means of improving decision-making in tourism planning, by making
information more accessible and usable. However, a fixation with technical
solutions can lose sight of the fundamental power relations which exist
within the Geographical Information System (GIS) technologies provide us
with these possibilities.
In this study, GIS design and network analysis were carried out by taking
advantages of GIS potentialities for tourism. It is likely to carry out some
queries by means of Network Analyst in GIS.This study explored the most

important fundamentals of tourism sector in Jordan before any attempt of

planning and marketing Jordanian touristic sites was made. It utilized the
Geographic Information System (GIS), which was based on establishing an
effective data base.
The major aim of this study was developing and exploiting the touristic
sites in Jordan. Therefore, the study integrated theoretical and practical
dimensions of tourism issue in Jordan. The theoretical framework consisted
of planning and marketing tourism concepts and theories, while the practical
aspect involved the classification of touristic sites in Jordan. Such
classification of the touristic sites will help in recognizing the spatial and
regional variations of developmental tourism, and guiding the formulation of
tourism plans in Jordan.
Contents of the study's seven chapters reflected the principle of
comprehensiveness and integration throughout the process of planning,
developing, and marketing touristic sites in Jordan. In the first chapter, the
problem of the study was formulated, the approach utilized, justifications of
doing this study, its objectives and importance were highlighted. Results of
previous studies related to the recent study were reviewed.
The second chapter discussed the concept of Geographic Information
System, and the stages of establishing a geographic data base were reviewed.

285

The first stage involved the collection of relevant data and information
related to this study.

Data storage and tabulation was performed in the

second stage. Finally, data processing and manipulation were carried out in
the third stage.
Chapter three focused on the physical and human basics of the tourism
industry in Jordan, its characteristics and pattern. Geographic aspects of
touristic sites were examined in detail. The chapter was ended with
providing a through spatial analysis of the directions of tourism activities in
certain attractive places in Jordan.
Strategies used in tourism planning process in Jordan were investigated in
the fourth chapter. Furthermore, the importance of the integration between
the touristic region and planning region was stressed. Finally, the chapter
was ended by displaying the value of applying the Geographic Information
System (GIS) in the planning of the eastern coast of the Dead Sea Touristic
area.
Chapter Five included methods of developing touristic sites in Jordan
through examining certain developmental models. A case study of Debin
resereve management as a touristic site was carried out.
Since there is an increasing importance of marketing issue in the tourism
industry, a great deal of attention was paid upon marketing touristic sites in

Jordan throughout chapter six.

286

Factors influencing touristic sites, and

comparisons between traditional marketing styles and the new ones were
investigated. A marketing system of touristic sites was proposed, and
applied to Amman Governorate.
In the last chapter, the findings and the recommendations of the study were
displayed in a concise manner. A list of Arabic and foreign references, and
internet sites related to the subject of this study were provided on the last
pages of the theses.
