“Live by Faith” (Hebrews 11:20-40) I. Introduction. A. Orientation. This morning, we saw one more thing The Lord looks for as He searches the earth Looking for someone to support: Faith. Not the kind of faith that everyone has – That merely believes He exists: The devil and his demons believe this, The damned in hell believe this, But they don’t please Him. He’s looking for those Who have a faith that works by love, Whose hearts compel them to come And seek the honors/rewards He has to give. B. Preview. The Bible is full of examples Of men and women like this To encourage us to cultivate the same kind of heart. Thankfully, the Lord moved the heart
2 Of the author to the Hebrews To include many of them in this chapter. So let’s look at some of these examples To see two things: First, to see how faith changed the direction of their lives. And second, to remind ourselves These are the kind of people The Lord uses. I just want to note That although our text this evening is verses 20-40, We’re going to look at examples from the first 19 verses as well. This was just a convenient way to split up A rather lengthy chapter. II. Sermon. A. So first, how did faith change the direction of the lives of those who had it? 1. Notice what it did in Abel’s life (v. 4). It moved him to offer to God What He actually wanted – a blood sacrifice – Not like Cain, who brought a sacrifice from the fruit of the ground – Offering to God what Cain wanted. Why did Abel bring what pleased God But Cain didn’t?
3 Because Abel had faith, and Cain didn’t. How was Abel’s sacrifice an act of faith? Well ask yourself: Has God wanted something from you That you haven’t been willing to give Him? Could the reason be Because you didn’t have enough faith – Because you didn’t believe His Word Strongly enough to take it seriously? Or maybe you did believe But you just couldn’t find it in your heart To do what God called you to do. What would make you more willing? More of this faith that works by love. The more you have, The more you will do as Abel did: Giving God what pleases Him, Rather than giving Him what pleases you. Faith makes all the difference between the two, Because it assures you that what you do Really does make a difference.
