Senior citizens have found the internet to be a useful outlet for their loneliness. They are able to make friends with other senior citizens and share their problems. Some have even found a cure for their illness through chatting on the chat channels. Teachers are also on the internet to take advantage of the information of the highway. Benefits of extra-curricular For Teens By Jennie Kelly Extra-Curricular activities help to better prepare your teen to enter the world as a compete, self-assured adult. When a majority of parents think of extra-curricular activities, they envision team sports. In addition, while participating in any team sport from cheerleading to football may pinch your wallet, they teach your young person some very valuable life skills. The most visible lesson that a teen can take from participating on a team sport is knowing how to work with others to obtain the same goal. This lesson alone will help your youth obtain and keep employment, and they are more likely to advance quickly within their chosen field. The most important lesson from a psychological point of view would be the lessons in socialization. Children of all ages benefit from socializing with their peers but the lessons learned as teens carry us through the rest of our lives. As a teen, we learn to nurture lasting friendships and relationships through a rough ride of trial and error. A teen that misses these lessons later struggles through life, bouncing from one relationship to another, often getting in trouble with the law. Organized and adult supervised extra-curricular activities also teach teens a respect for following the rules. Many of the same rules the player must abide by to participate in football are also important in real life. Be on time, don't drink or do drugs, and respect your fellow team mate can all be turned around and applied to the workforce that we want our teens to someday enter. Break team rules or go against the coach and you will be punished. It's the same in the real world, break the rules and you may lose your job, or worse you could be visiting your teen in jail. Yes, these are expensive lessons, but look at the rewards you and your teen receive in the end. Self-assured, well-adjusted young adults ready to spread the wings and give you back the nest.

Page 13

[ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY] August 1, 2011

Most only return for visits, rather than moving in and out and needing mom and dad to bail them out from this mess or that. If you cannot afford team sports then try to get your teen involved in a youth group at a local church or organization. They have rules too, their just worded a bit differently and the lessons are presented in a more relaxed environment. Invest in your teen's future now and you will see the rewards in a few years. Participation in extra-curricular activities will foster creative, social and physical skills that are desirable qualities to colleges and future employers. Involvement can strengthen self-esteem, build lasting friendships and create a lifetime of memories. These activities help define you in a different way than academic study will. Academics require so much of a teen's attention that subjects become jobs. Even a student who loves to read in spare time may find that assigned reading for an English class is work. Extra-curricular activities can provide a much-needed break from the academic grind. Surprisingly, there is sufficient argument that students who are involved in extracurricular activities earn better grades than students who are not. Parents may argue otherwise, and with good reasons. If a student's evenings are spent playing a sport or rehearsing a play, when will he or she have time to complete homework and study for tests? However, students who have active lives learn very quickly how to manage their time. Procrastination is not an option for a student whose days are busy and structured. Students are much more likely to study during specified hours of down time than another student who "has the entire weekend, so right now I'll just play with my Wii." Along those lines, students learn organizational skills from having to wisely budget their time. Calendars are necessary tools, not only for busy teens, but for busy adults, too! Learning how to use one properly is a fantastic skill to master, both in the classroom and after graduating. Parents can aid their teen in creating and maintaining the family calendar by allowing them to write practice schedules, due dates and study group meetings. It's fun, it keeps family members in-the-loop, and effectively maintains household sanity.

Page 14

Better grades can also stem from the discipline that extra-curricular activities teach. Good coaches do not respond well to poor excuses for missing practices. Failing in a school subject generally hurts only the student. Failing at a group activity affects everyone. Involved students learn this truth quickly, and loyalty to themselves and teammates becomes an important priority. Teamwork is another part of discipline and a very necessary skill. Understanding how to work well with others can guarantee a lifetime of positive relationships. In extra-curriculars, students learn to encourage others, lift others' spirits, celebrate wins and learn from losses. Teamwork creates a humble nature, when we know that a success is not solely ours to take credit for, just as losses are not only our responsibility. We learn that camaraderie is as important in high school as it will be in college, at a job, and within our own families. Teamwork is well applied to studies. Group activities will be well monitored by the active students who already know how to share, delegate and carry their own weight! I work for a theatre company that participates in a theatre program for urban high school students who are considered "at risk." The school we chose was a school designated for, who administrators referred to as, "the worst of the worst." They were students expelled from the local public school and had nowhere else to go. However, each student involved in our program showed a marked improvement in grades. Even their attitudes towards school softened. Theatre provided these students an outlet-a chance to pretend to be someone else for a little while. And, at the end, eight students who could barely construct a complete sentence performed Shakespeare's Hamlet for their families, peers and teachers. They helped each other when one dropped a line, they assisted the other actors with costume changes and prop settings, and, at the end, grasped hands and took the most well-deserved bow I have ever seen on stage. Involvement in extra-curricular activities does not have to be expensive, overly time consuming, or exhausting. It doesn't even have to be school related. Religious groups often offer activities for youths, generally requiring only a few hours per week worth of time. Get creative. If no school activities look interesting, try volunteering.

Page 15

Animal shelters, food banks, and hospitals are always in need of help with various duties. The choice of extra-curricular activity matters little. What matters most is the student's enjoyment of it. Amazingly, the rest of the benefits simply fall into place!

Some Useful Speed Reading Techniques With the alarmingly increasing availability of information to people nowadays, need for speed reading is also on the rise. It is a collection of various techniques and methods that help in increasing your reading speed without actually reducing your retention and comprehension capabilities. This is becoming more and more popular among students and professionals alike. This is because students benefit through this skill by covering more chapters than their contemporaries. In the corporate world, employees with this skill are able to comprehend various reports, newspapers, emails, correspondence and other technical papers faster. Thus, it improves the efficiency and productivity of the person along with providing him more time to deal with other facets of life.

Speed Reading Techniques:

Though learning to read speedily does not help in increasing the I.Q of a person, it does help in increasing the ability of the brain to comprehend various new concepts in a short span of time. In addition to these techniques, one should strengthen his or her comprehension and vocabulary to master this skill completely. Some common basic techniques that can be followed may be listed as follows: Avoid Reading Word by Word: Unfortunately, most of us are taught to read word by word since our childhoods. This is a typically common poor reading habit, which makes the person concentrate more on the words rather than the concept presented by the complete text. For speed reading, one needs to read in chunks and blocks while grasping the basic essence of these groups. Avoiding Sub Vocalization: Considered to be one of the major speed reading techniques, according to it, one should avoid pronouncing each word when reading as it reduces the comprehension ability and the reading speed of the person. One should practice regularly to get out of this reading speed slowing habit.

Page 22

[ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY] August 1, 2011

Focus on Reading: There are many who believe in multi tasking. However, one should avoid combining any other work while reading and try to just sit and read. Avoiding all kinds of distractions and disturbances will help in improving the reading speed of the person. Skimming the Content for Main Ideas: Reading is not a linear practice. It is not necessary that one take in the sentences and paragraphs sequentially and in order. One should develop the habit of scanning the complete content in the minimum possible time they can and focus more on the important content, which are often highlighted in bold or are in bulleted points. This will help him or her in avoiding the fluff and concentrating more on the vital material. Take Regular Breaks: Steady reading for hours at a stretch affects the efficiency of the person while slowing down the retention process. One should take regular breaks to refresh him or herself, which also helps in avoiding much strain on the eyes. By continuous practice of these speed reading techniques, one will notice a considerable amount of change in his or her own reading style in a very short span of time. Though many are blessed with speed reading naturally, there are a whole lot of courses available on the market also that help people in learning the same. One just needs to remember that speed reading is not magic. Regular practice and concentration are the only two ways that will help him or her to master this truly valuable art.

Education Themes: How to get teens involved with extraCurricular activities

Extra-curricular activities such as sports, drama, music, dance, and other clubs are an important part of the education system and a child's experience in the school system. And while parent involvement in education is extremely important, parent involvement in extra-curricular activities is also important. It is often through volunteer time of active parents that we even have access to extra-curricular activities. According to Scholastic Magazine, teens that participate in extracurricular activities have better grades and feel more accomplished. Depression, substance abuse and behavioral issues are at a lowered risk as well when a teens participates in an extracurricular activity. A teens may feel reluctant if you try and force him to get involved in a particular sport or club. You should instead aim to be encouraging instead of overbearing. But, the questions of an issues that have been provoked by others is how to make sure child or even teens involved with this mentioned activities? Now, let discuss about this. In some countries, the educational systems are only based on fixed curriculum with a number of books and learning materials that most people consider them as insufficient or restrictive for the students comprehension skills and imaginations. Although it is now believed that todays the best educational systems constitute not only a curriculum but also extra-curricular social or cultural activities which have many advantages like increase in sociability, learning new things and better motivation for school, it is yet underestimated in some countries. Just now, the popular issues being asked and always being the main topic on education issues or even being a discussion theme on television or radio is how to get children or teens to involved with extra-curricular activities. There are few step to followed:

Page 28

[ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY] August 1, 2011

Step 1: First, research the extracurricular activities available. Call the child's school or contact community centers to find out what type of programs are available. Other places to look are athletic leagues, churches and rec centers. Gather the information and set a time for you and your child to go over the options. Keep both your schedules in mind when you research activities. You will want to look for an option that gives your child at least two days a week of downtime. Step 2: Next, point out his strengths. If he is really good at sports, praise his athletic abilities and suggest something where he is likely to excel. For instance, if he is a fast runner, encourage him to go out for the track team. Artistic children might enjoy a music or pottery class. Step 3: Thus, consider a gateway class that offers a multitude of activities. If your child is unsure of what activities she is interested in, this type of class can help her decide. Centers like Gymboree Play & Learn offer a mix of sports, art and music-themed classes for preschool kids, and My Gym offers similar classes for kids in elementary school. For the older set, the YMCA offers multiple sport and leadership programs. Step 4: Moreover, let her know how much fun she is likely to have if she joins an extracurricular activity. Try to suggest a club or sport that some of her friends are also participating in. Step 5: Then, sign up for a trial. Many programs offer a free class to attract perspective participants. This gives the child a chance to see whether or not he would like to continue with the extracurricular activity. Step 6:

Page 29

[ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY] August 1, 2011

Last but not least, accept "No" as an answer. If your child says "No," do not force the issue. Allow her to find an activity on her own that she is interested in and encourage her to sign up for it. As a conclusion, Due to the fact that teens will spend some time on extra-curricular activities in addition to school works, as a result, they will feel motivated, emotionally better and ready to take the challenge of studying a variety of different subjects in school. There are numerous advantages of participating in social, cultural and extracurricular activities concerning sociability, the increase in peoples knowledge about new things and their motivation for the hardships of life. Hence, teens and child should be encouraged to participate in activities which are different than their studies in order to create a better-adjusted, motivated societies.

Reflection:
Alhamdulillah praised to Allah for making me patient by doing this coursework. Praised to Allah for giving me an opportunity to complete and finish this coursework smoothly on time. I really enjoyed this course. Although I came in with some prior knowledge of education systems in different classes, through this course I was exposed to a remarkable breadth of information and research on education around the world. I really enjoyed the course readings; in particular the texts on education reform in many countries. This course was my final one to complete my Pra-Degrees before continue to finish my degrees studies. Yet, this course did give me the opportunity to do some reflecting on assessment in the programs that Ive studied. First of all, I would like to extend my heartfelt to Mdm. Tan Mei Chin for his guidance to help us by doing this KKP. She is the one like mother and also being our good tutor that always release our smash-kick thinking even our tension and ugly face. This course was extremely enjoyable from an intellectual and philosophical standpoint. I can't help but wish, though, that I had been able to take it during a regular semester and not packed into five weeks in the summer. This made internalizing the information and reflection very difficult indeed. Ive no experience by doing this course when I was sitting my studies on my secondary school so when this course continuous came for three semester of Pra-degrees so its kinda like normal homework given. Besides, a lot of valuable experience can be share to others and prepared me to become a good qualities of teacher. I guess. During the course of executing the work, there are many problems I force to face that is lack of resources and problems in processing information and describe the available information. But the support given by friends and my parents, I was excited to do this course. Interestingly is, I can complete this course work in just a few hours a day. I smile and even more excited while Hari Raya

mood was "activated".

Page 31

[ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY] August 1, 2011

Last but not least, I hope this course will lend me to earn better grades on my IPGs performing besides this KKP build a good character and changing persons attitude and so on for example, Ive learn on teamwork effort and also being a good friendship with seniors members. So, thanks a lot to all supporters, members and my parents. I love you.
