From its regal 1.5-acre perch atop a hill just north

of Santa Fe, this magnificent private enclave enjoys a
dramatically sweeping view that encompasses mountains
to the west and south. Architect John Midyette and builder
John Wolf have created an inspired adobe residence that, while
undeniably superlative, is understated in its elegance and utterly
livable. Characterized by a chic openness and distinctly Southwestern
air, the master-bedroom wing includes two private offices as well as
separate master baths with roomy walk-in closets. At the opposite end of
the home in a wing of their own are two additional bedroom suites with full
spa-like baths. A comfortable guesthouse with a full kitchen, portal, and pool
access is sited just on the other side of the garages. The grounds—fully walled,

fenced, and secured behind a stately gate—are strewn with mature high-desert foliage.

would go up to Wyoming part of the year for seasonal

In 1935, the federal researchers for the Tewa Basin Study
said most of El Rito’s families owned farm land along the
valley of El Rito Creek, and that the average farm had 71
acres of tillable land.
“The farmers and ranchers of this community own more
head of livestock than any of the communities along the
Rio Grande or Rio Chama,” the study says. Crops including
alfalfa, beans, and wheat were plagued by grasshoppers and
inadequate irrigation.
“There are not enough potatoes raised here for all the
families. Only the loamy lands along the first valley will
produce potatoes… Crops are invariably short, and a
bartering system between the farmers is used,” the report
says.
Families gardened cabbage, turnips, radishes, carrots,
corn, peas, mustard, and melons, and tended orchard trees.
Canning and drying of fruits and vegetables was a common
provisioning practice.
The researchers found livestock in El Rito totaled 607
cattle and 500 horses. The average family had a team of
horses and three head of cattle. Three ranchers had 3,260
sheep. One family had 300 goats.

disaster to many of the ranchers, as cattle died along the
old watering places in numbers so great that it is claimed
that a person could walk on dead cattle and horses all along
the valley. Many of the ranchers did not recover from this
drought and were forced to take up farming for a living.”
Life was pioneer-style tough in many regards, including
medicine, since the nearest hospital was in Santa Fe and the
nearest doctor in Española. Accordingly, most of the babies
were delivered by local women.
It was in the 1920s that the name Martin arrived in El
Rito, the family purchasing a 100-acre farm there. Greg
Martin’s great-uncle became a partner in John Sargent’s
general store and within a decade the enterprise was known
as Martin’s. At the time of the Tewa Basin Study, the store
had $3,500 in stock and routinely bought cattle, sheep, and
wool from local farmers.
There were two other stores in the early 1930s: the
Gonzales store, which had $700 stock and housed the post
office; and the Chavez store, with about $2,500 in stock.

residents have always irrigated their small gardens and
orchards, and their fields of grass for sheep and cattle. The
water comes from the surrounding mountains, flowing in
the El Rito Creek and diverted to the various properties in
acequias (engineered ditches).
“We still have two or three main acequias and I would
say they serve at least 200 households,” Gonzales said. “We
still count on the acequias, although they are only used
with the runoff and we don’t have too much runoff after
July.”
El Rito’s population has been pretty constant for a
long time. In 1935, the village’s population totaled 197
Spanish-American families and 13 Anglo families — 1,203
people altogether. Today, according to the Web site of the
Carson National Forest, the community is “predominantly
Hispanic with a mix of many other ethnic backgrounds.
Population is approximately 1,300.”

One of the biggest annual events these days is the El

19 stops, including at Northern New Mexico College (a
community artist mercado and displays from the college’s

you can see and buy santos by Nicholas and Elena Herrera,

other artworks by local people. For details about the event,

enman & Associates, a 28-year-old Santa
Fe design and construction firm, recently
completed tenant improvements for the
Bioneers organization in the two-story
building at the north end of the Santa
Fe Farmers Market. Another recent project was a stuccoed
addition to a log cabin in Tesuque. “It’s a very well-insulated
building made with aerated concrete, and there’s an organic
garden and the house has a solar hot-water system,” Burke
Denman said. “That’s the kind of client that’s just exciting to
come across.”
Denman is one of four owners in the partnership;
the others are Chuck Apple, Sally Butler, and Bradley
Gummersall. Denman is also owner of Santa Fe Stoneworks
on Second Street, and has served as president for the last
eight years at the nonprofit Sustainable Communities/ZERI-
NM.
ZERI is the acronym for the Switzerland-based Zero
Emission Recovery Initiative. “I’m a ZERI-trained
practitioner,” Denman said. “The idea is that once there was
no waste; everything was in balance until we came along. But
if you look at our industrial and agricultural processes, there
are many times when the waste can produce something really
abundant.
“The best example to me is that if you take barley hulls
after the [beer] brewing process, it’s inedible and it’s usually
just landfilled. But if you introduce mushroom mycelium
into it, the mushrooms transform it into an edible product.”
He said the process was developed by a woman in
Colombia. The grower can produce several generations of
mushrooms in the barley substrate, which in the process is
converted to a food that pigs love.
Sustainable Communities/ZERI recently worked on two
projects at Picuris Pueblo: a mushroom-growing facility and
a sustainable charcoal plant that makes use of small-diameter
wood from forest-thinning projects.
Thinking about, and acting on, sustainability issues,
Denman relates back to 1970, when he lived in a commune
and worked for an organic farmer in the San Luis Valley of
southern Colorado. He gained some experience there in
building adobe structures and when he moved to Santa Fe in
1971, it wasn’t long before he was putting up a passive-solar
adobe house on Chupadero Creek.
Passive-solar homes make so much sense with all the
sunshine New Mexico gets, and the Santa Fe area led the
nation in solar design in the 1970s. But then, regrettably, the
movement subsided. “Even today, with all this talk about COURTESY ROBERT RECK

Denman & Associates has done a lot of design-build work
since it started up in 1981. These days, the company usually
works with architects, such as it did on a beautiful, straw-bale
home designed by Beverley Spears earlier in this decade.
And while Denman has a solid reputation for projects
relating to sustainability, Denman & Associates has a solidly
“green” client only about one project in four.
“There are other things we have going that aren’t very
green at all,” he said, then added, “To me, there’s a lot of
greenwashing going on. I like the word “sustainable” more
than “green,” and one thing about keeping a business
sustainable is there has to be work. You have to have cash
flow.
“About a year and a half ago, the phone started ringing
with people who were really serious about sustainability
and energy-efficiency. The term ‘zero-energy home’ started
floating around, and I think when gasoline got to $4 a gallon,
people started thinking more about how they lead their lives
and wondering how big of an energy consumer and a carbon
gas producer their homes were.”
Two glass awards in the Denman & Associates office
testify to the company’s early work along these lines: a 1998
Renew America Award for “green” construction and a 1999
Green Zia Environmental Excellence Program Award For
Achievement.
“Last year I went to the Green Build Conference in
Boston,” Denman said. “There were hundreds of distributors
who were promoting their products as green, and a lot of
them really weren’t that green, but the fact that 29,000 people
came to see what they had to offer says something about
people’s interest.”
he said. “They immediately had thousands of applicants, COURTESY ERIKA BLUMENFELD
