October 1, 2009To the Washington College Class of 2003,I hope 2009 has been treating you well—it’s been awhile! I hope you’ll take a moment toreview this email for an update on our class, all that is going on campus, and upcomingregional events:

CALL FOR CLASS NOTES!
I encourage you to submit class notes for the WCMagazine. You can submit class notes on line by e-mailing them to:classnotes@washcoll.edu. Because of space limitations WC cannot publish every photo they receive, but you improve your chances if your digital photos are of good quality and at least
300 dpi
at a canvas size of 3x5.

Campus Building Projects:
The Daniel Z. Gibson Center for the Arts
opened its doors to students and faculty on the first day of classes. It is simply a spectacular addition to campus and to Chestertown as well. The center will be dedicated on Friday, October 2

at 3:30 pm in the Decker Theatre.The new 
 Hodson Hall 
dining complex hopes to open its doors to students by November. It too isa spectacular addition to the campus.The final phase of the
 Alumni House
renovation will include building an entertainment porch onthe side of the
 Alumni House
, which will be accessed from the dining room. Construction should begin in early October and the house will be rededicated in April.Presidential SearchThe Search Committee, represented by Faculty, Alumni, members of the Board of Visitors &Governors and the Administration has been engaged in an extensive outreach and recruitmentprocess to find Baird Tipson’s successor. Committee Chair, Jay Young ’81 reports that thecommittee received more than 80 nominations. Well over 100 individuals have expressed an
 
interest in being considered for the Presidency. In late September, the search committee willinterview up to 10 candidates over a two day period of time. The committee looks forward toconcluding their work and selecting the best possible candidate to lead Washington College intothe future. Alumni Relations (

):Reunion on the River 2009 saw Chestertown vibrant with school colors as we celebrated a very successful weekend nearly doubling attendance from the previous Reunion. It seems thatGhostbox was such a hit it started a new theme for this year’sReunion Weekend:Mark your calendar for Reunion 2010, “Back by Popular Demand” May 14, 15 & 16, when wecelebrate the Arts at Washington College.Alumni Board News:Three new Alumni have joined the Alumni Board – Charlie Athey ’01, Pete Shafer ’86 and HeatherSpurrier ’00.The Dean’s Office Washington College welcomes 5 new Faculty members; Aaron W. Amick, Asst. Professor of Chemistry; Jehanne Dubrow, Asst. Professor of English; Sean ross Meehan, Asst. Professor of English; Mark Nowak, Associate Professor of English and Director of the Rose O’Neill Literary House and Joseph Gilbert Purd’homme, Asst. Professor of Political Science. Admissions:Fall 2009 total enrollment: Undergraduates = 1314, Graduate Students = 58 Again, Washington College has enrolled one of its largest classes ever totaling 378.Student Affairs As usual, first-years were introduced to the life of a college student through individual meetings with their academic advisors, a tour of Chestertown and sessions that addressed issues such asthe Honor Code, alcohol, and safety and security during the summer.H1N1 Flu Preparations have been on the top of the Student Affairs list as we welcome students back to campus. The College has incorporated guidance from the Center for Disease Control andpublic health agencies to inform student how to prevent and how to treat the flu should they show symptoms. AthleticsHonors earned over the Summer include:
 
Conner Blouin ’10 of the sailing team was named an All-American Honorable Mention becoming the second sailor to ever earn that recognition at WC.
 
Lacrosse player Brittany Lambert ’09 was named an ESPN the Magazine At-Large Academic All-American for the second straight year
 
 
Lacrosse player Jimmy Kielek ’09 was awarded an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship.
 
Both swim teams were awarded Team Scholar All American status for the Spring 2009semester by the College Swimming Coaches Association. To win the award the team mustfinish with a team grade-point average of at least 3.0.
 
 Allie Hanzsche ’10 and Whitney Donald ’10 were named to the Intercollegiate Women’sLacrosse Coaches Association Academic Squad.
