Dear Supporters,
December 2008

With the festive season once again upon us, and the New Year just around the corner, this is a particularly chaotic time of year. However, it is also a time to look back and reflect on the many things that have happened in 2008. When Nicola and I look back to last Christmas, we were in Uganda tucking in to our favourite pet goat for dinner! When the S.A.L.V.E. children look back to last Christmas, it was a day like any other; they were without their families and on the street, relentlessly searching for even scraps of food.

But thanks to your support, there are now ten children off the streets of Uganda, in school and with a home. There is nothing better you could ever do for a child. As you look back over 2008 there will have been both sad and happy times, but if there is one thing that you remember, it is that you helped to give a child their life back.

So, what’s been happening at S.A.L.V.E.?
Fantastic School Reports

It has been truly amazing to watch how some of the children are starting to show really significant improvements in their school reports, helped by the extra tuition your sponsorship covers. We are all incredibly proud of the work the children have put in to adjusting to their lives off the streets and want to especially mention Emma, Ronald and Dinah for how far they have come in the last school term. All the children have come a long way, no matter what grades they have received in school and we are immensely pleased

with the way they have come together to become a family that cares deeply for one
another.
Christmas Comes Early!

Last week Mike organised a Christmas party for the S.A.L.V.E. children and their families and foster parents. For many of the children, this was the first Christmas party they have ever had and it was certainly one to remember! Thanks to the fundraising efforts of everyone who took part in the Three

Peaks’ Challenge, money was donated for everyone to have a special Christmas meal at a hotel,
followed by swimming– again, a first for many. Needless to say, a wonderful time was had by
all...what a shame it’s not Christmas every day!
Ten Children are Off the Street!
In November, S.A.L.V.E. UK had a little celebration of its own when we reached double figures as
Hassan, our tenth child was brought into the S.A.L.V.E. House. Since our last newsletter in
September, we have three more sponsors, and we’d like to say a heartfelt thank you to Gooii of

Nottingham for sponsoring Hassan, Janet Turley for sponsoring Dinah and Roundwood Primary School for sponsoring Tiff. Huge thanks goes to them for the support and generosity they have shown in taking on a child.

Fantastic Fundraising
As you know, our work just wouldn’t be possible without your support and we’ve been so impressed
by the generosity you’ve shown us in the last few months.

Special mention must go to Judi Morley and the congregation of St. Anne’s Church, Tottington for giving S.A.L.V.E. the proceeds from their fair-trade stall, Peggy Graham for donating half the money she received for her birthday, Barnaby Millard for donating the proceeds of the sale of his car and Katy Thompson for her Christmas donation.

Huge thanks also go to the twenty one brave souls who took on the Three Peaks’ Challenge in November. The challenge, which comprises climbing the three highest peaks in England, Scotland and Wales in 24 hours, was a huge success, despite the aches and pains at the finish line. Their hard work raised over £2200 and from everyone at S.A.L.V.E. we’d like to say how incredibly grateful we are. Also a big thank you goes to Simon Owen and Lisa Morgan for their mini bus driving through the night; it wouldn’t have been possible without you guys!

S.A.L.V.E. is One Year Old (nearly)!

1st February 2009 will see S.A.L.V.E. International’s first birthday. Although this is rather early, we would like to say thank you to everyone who has supported us in this first year. It is sometimes difficult to get even the smallest things up and running, and so to set up a whole charity is no mean feat! We would like to say that we just couldn’t have done it without you. Your donations, your support, and not to mention, your trust, has meant everything to us, and without that we simply

wouldn’t be where we are today.
Uganda Calling …

January will see Nicola jetting off to Uganda (lucky thing!) and with a trip to the zoo planned for her and the children, it looks set to be a fantastic trip for all concerned. However, very importantly, Nic will also be getting S.A.L.V.E. ready to receive its first volunteers in the New Year. We are looking for a couple of people who are keen to get into the charity sector and would like some very hands-on experience to add to their C.V. We will be advertising the positions in the coming months, but if you know of anyone who may be interested then please do pass on our details.
