Richard Weaver was a man of great charisma, an eclectic, in the words of a writer who knew him, "who combined within himself a Western philosophicalpsychological background and a lifelong fascination with oriental religions and philosophical thought." He was also, variously, a hobo, sailor, logger, cook, ambulance driver, poet and university professor, who found most institutionstoo narrow, too confining. In the mid-1960s he found his way to the Esalen Institute in California, where pioneer work was being done in what came to be known as the human potential movement. But Esalen was becoming an institution, and while Richard Weaver relumed there to learn more, he chafed. "Esalen, in my view," he told an interviewer, "operates like the town music hall- Any act that can draw a crowd can occupy the space. I don't want to do that."
