Wikipedia defines communication as:
transferringinformation from one entity to another
. And yet when we arecommunicating with each other, it is not a simple transaction. It is a
conversation
. We are sharing our thoughts, ideas, dreams, fears andoys! With or without words, communication is the way in which we
connect.
Facial expressions, gestures, sign language, words and eventechnology, are ways in which we can communicate. As we begin thisschool year, let us
connect to each other
. Let us help a child learn tocommunicate their ideas, thoughts, dreams, fears and joys in whatever way possible. Let us feel the power of communication.

As researchers work diligently to bring us new information, so mustwe work diligently to learn this information and apply it in our practice. ASHA describes the goal of evidence based practice(EBP) as:
the integration of: (a) clinical expertise, (b) best currentevidence, and (c) client values to provide high-quality services reflecting the interests, values, needs, and choices of theindividuals we serve
(taken from: www.asha.org). In the “What’sUp?” section of each edition we will present and summarize anarticle. We hope that in doing so, we will all be in tune with“What’s Up?” in the research world. This edition’s article is available at:www.literacyencyclopedia.ca.It is titled:
Factors that Influence Language Development
writtenby
:
Judith Johnston, Ph.D., School of Audiology and SpeechSciences, University of British Columbia. This online Literacy and Language Encyclopedia was developedto provide evidence based- answers to questions aboutchildren’s language and literacy development. Each article is asummation of up-to-date research on a specific topic. JudithJohnston’s article summarizes research findings that describe howthe interrelationship of 5 areas: social, perceptual, cognitiveprocessing, conceptual, and linguistic, affects languagedevelopment. She indicates that language development is animportant measure of a child’s success in other complex learningtasks. She suggests that we can facilitate language learning
(a)by presenting language examples that are in accord with thechild's perceptual, social and cognitive resources; and (b) bychoosing learning goals that are in harmony with the commoncourse of development
