The Old West and Indian Territory days are an era ingrained in the American
imagination, and no single item represents this period more than the gun. Come
see and learn about three guns that were part of this legendary, and ofen
mythical, period of American History.

Guns of the Frontier, a series overview, will be presented by
Robert Pickering, Ph.D., Director of Curatorial & Public
Programs at the Gilcrease Museum in Tulsa, OK, and former
Deputy Director of the Bufalo Bill Historical Center in Cody,
WY. Dr. Pickering will discuss the role guns played in
setling the frontier and in the building of the nation, the
types of guns that were most popular, and myths versus the
realities of gunslingers.

The Hangman and His Winchester

Location: River Park West Room, 121 Riverfront Drive, Fort Smith
The Hangman and His Winchester will showcase a Winchester
Rife, acquired by the Museum in 2013, and its infamous owner,
the Prince of Hangmen George Maledon. David Bichrest,
Gunsmith, Winchester Consultant, and Past President of the
Winchester Arms Collectors Association will discuss the history
of Winchester Repeating Arms, Winchesters popularity on the
Frontier, and what made the Winchester Model 1873 the gun
that won the West. A panel of local historians will discuss the
facts vs. myths of the life of Maledon, one of the more elusive
fgures of Judge Parkers Court.

A Deputy and His Colt

A Deputy and His Colt will highlight Bass Reeves, best known
for being one of the frst African-American deputy marshals
west of the Mississippi River. Judge Paul Brady, retired
federal Judge and great-nephew of Bass Reeves, will discuss
Reeves life and times as a deputy, and Paul Szymaszek,
Historical Research Assistant from the Colt Historical
Department, will examine the history of Colt Firearms, the
popularity of Colt on the frontier, and important features of
Reeves .32 Colt Revolver, donated to the Museum by Judge
Brady in 2011.

An Outlaw and His Smith & Wesson

An Outlaw and His Smith & Wesson will feature Roy Jinks,
Historian for Smith & Wesson, as he highlights the history of
Smith & Wesson, its popularity on the frontier, and the
distinguishing characteristics of the Russian model,
including the ivory handled, long-barreled .44 pistol carried by
Proctor and on loan to the USMM for this program. Learn
about the life of Proctor from one of his descendents.
