Volcanic eruption took place in the Sahara Desert millions of years ago. In the process, the up-welling lava brought with it copper, lead, zinc gold and silver metals from the centre of the earth. Today, those metallogenic deposits are being discovered as volcanogenic massive sulphide (VMS) deposits. Mining of such deposits is taking place at Jabal Sayid in Saudi Arabia, Sukari in Egypt and Bisha in Eritrea. This discovery was made at Hassai in north-eastern Sudan.
