ALDERMANIC MESSAGE
Just as September returned the children to schoolchores, it gave us additional time to work on theprograms we need to obtain and the services we arecommitted to giving. We continue meeting withexperts, looking at various Urban Agriculture projectsand searching for funding. Some of you may haveheard that we will be doing Urban Farming in the 6
th
Ward. We’ve identified some lots and are waiting forthe environmental studies to be completed. Acompanion project to one being undertaken by Ald.Helen Shiller of the 46
th
Ward, we’ve been joiningforces and sharing resources to get her indoorAquaponics/hyrdoponics operation underway and myfarm in Englewood planted. It’s my plan to also doAquaponics (farming fish) but we are proceedingmethodically and the first step is to get somethinggrowing. Let me add that early on we met withChicago State University and the City Colleges of Chicago about the creation of a curriculum for youthPre-K thru College. Chicago State has stepped up tothe challenge and last Friday (while they were flushingour plans for the Olympics) I was walking through theproposed site of the Aquaponics program at CSU. It’sgoing to be really impressive.

Producing more freshvegetables is only one part of the solution to the problem of lack of access incommunities of color.

Distribution is another part.In that regard we plan to (and are working on)creating a year round Market where we can sell ourproduce, farmers can sell their products and other smalllocal business persons can sell theirs. I want to be clearthat we will never grow enough on our farm to fill theneeds of those communities. That is not the goal. Ourgoal is to increase the quantity and quality of produce tothose within our reach. It is our goal to educate all whohear our voices about healthy choices. Our goal is toencourage and prod Churches to teach home economicskills so young mothers can properly prepare the producewe are providing. It’s our goal to teach children how tovalue the earth, plant a seed, watch something grow andthen eat it for dinner. It’s our goal to reduce the rates of childhood obesity, childhood diabetes, and childhoodhypertension. More on our plans and how it ties intohomeland security next month…..As I was returning from the Congressional Black Caucus in DC (where I met with ‘green’ people andstudied the DC Eastern Market) everyone was talkingabout how substantive the program was this year.We were all energized and ready to do battle in ourrespective communities. While sitting in the airport I jumped on the internet to read the papers and learnedabout the 3 Black teens who were murdered. Both JudgeMichael Stuttley and I were at a loss for words. JudgeStuttley handles troubled youth in Markham and hasworked diligently to help them turn their lives around. But even he was surprised at the savagery occurring inour neighborhoods. No one has the silver bullet that willmake young men stop shooting, or young men realizethat there are consequences to their actions and whenyou beat someone with a 2 x 4 they do really, really die. What we did agree on however was, we can not stopworking to save those we can and protect those we donot even know. We must work in our homes, in ourChurches and in our neighborhoods to instill values andrespect into the young people we touch. Wemust mobilize and collectively say enough is enoughto those young predators who walk among us and thosein charge of protecting all of us. The same energies thatpropelled a Black Chicagoan to the White House mustnow be channeled into creating a society that nurturesand protects its youth. I know that's a tall order butI know that together we can, once again.

COMMUNITY TREASURES
St. Columbanus
I was talking to a woman while standing in a line inWashington, D.C. on Sept. 24th who now lives in St.Louis but was raised in Chicago, and attended St.Columbanus. I began to tell her how beautiful the Churchlooks and she told me she visits whenever she is herebecause her sister still lives in the area and is an activevolunteer. Founded in 1909, St. Columbanus Church andSchool served the needs of Irish immigrants who movedinto the prosperous Park Manor neighborhood. By 1954,the Parish membership became predominately African-American, making St. Columbanus Church one of theoldest Black Catholic parishes in Chicago. 100 yearslater, as other Parishes lost their schools andcongregations, St. Columbanus remains a vibrantcommunity Church with a quality school.
