An abnormal beak in Eurasian Griffon
Gyps fulvus

Rafael Palomo, Alvaro Camiña & Juan Coleto
A nearly adult Eurasian Griffon was observed in Alcudia Valley, Ciudad Realprovince, Central Spain (38º 38´N, 5º 37´W) on 8 December 2004 whilemonitoring an existing feeding site (“muladar”).The griffon was photographed by both R. Palomo and J. Coleto, seepicture below. Its beak was longer as compared with its normal length invultures and seemed as a parrot like bill. The bird remained fighting for foodamong the group that was comprised of 40 griffons and two Cinereous Vultures(
Aegypius monachus
).We do not know of other similar abnormalities in wild griffons such heredescribed (Mundy et al. 1992, Donázar 1993). The vulture age seemed not ofhaving constrained or handicapped its feeding behaviour. Furthermore, this isthe first time we have seen a bird like this in the area since 2000 when firstmonitoring started there.
