What can you do individually?
To those of you that have street
cred, you have often in your
hoods shown examples of power.
Now I encourage my brothers to
show " the power of example. "
Began to pull your little homies
and at risk kids up. Try and
become a positive force, a
mentor in their lives. You may
not be able to them all, but my
brother if you can change the
trajectory of one life, keep one
kid from a life in and out of
prison or an early death, then you
have done a commendable
service to your community.

To those of you generally, both
men and woman, visit the
schools. Go to the PTA meetings
and the school boards open
meetings. Hold people
accountable for your
neighborhood, your children. To
those of you that have job skills,
find a place where you can teach
those skills to our kids. It's said
that, "It takes a community to
raise a child." We all have to
become engaged, involved. The
price of our collective inactivity
is far too great. If not you, then
who? If not now, then when?

One love. Akbar Pray

Like previous generations, young
people find comfort in the perceived
infallibility of their youth. Though its
understandable, no one has the means of
knowing what lies ahead in their future, in
todays legislative and judicial climate of
crime and punishmentsecond
chances are becoming faded

Manson followers faces parole 19
th

time
-Associated Press, July 6, 2010
Leslie Van Houten, 60, was
19 when she fell under the spell of
Charles Mansons so-called cult
family. Despite having no previous
criminal record and her numerous
accomplishments over the years, the
sum of her life remains encapsulated
in a notorious crime that occurred in
1969 (Nixon was president, Free
Huey was the cause clbre and
college protests against the Vietnam
War divided the country)a lifetime
ago. Susan Atkins, one of her co-
defendants, died from cancer after the
parole board once again denied her
release last year (blind, paralyzed and
comatose, she was 19 at the time of
her arrest). George Jackson was 17
when he was arrested for allegedly
robbing a gas station and sentenced to
life. Repeatedly denied parole, he
was assassinated in a purported escape
attempt from San Quentin (August 21,
1971). Here in New Jersey State Prison,
James Rodwell has also bee serving a life
sentence since 1969, due to unrelenting
parole denials.
There are currently 2,480 juveniles
sentenced to life without parole nationwide.
The Supreme Courts recent Young
decision, declaring sentencing juveniles to
life without parole for crimes that didnt
include the taking of a life; constituted
cruel and unusual punishment. Presently,
2
37 states allow juveniles to be sentenced
to life without parole for crimes other
than homicide. Only in America, is there
such a thing as burying children with a
prison number without affording them a
second chance. In draconian states, such
a s Florida, even an 11-year old can be
sentenced to life. The justices 5-4
decision doesnt compel the states to
grant parole to juvenile lifers, but accord
them a hearing for parole consideration
after an unspecified minimum amount of
time. A parole denial would entitle them
to periodic reviews thereafter. Rodwell
reached his 14-! year minimum
eligibility for parole in 1984. Hes still
here due to one parole board hit after
another. In Van Houtens case, she has
seen the board 18 times. Thus there is no
3
guarantee the Courts plit decision in
Kenneth Young of Floridas behalf, will
ensure he or any other juvenile lifer will
ever be granted parole. Hence, second
chances have become the new lottery.
There are thousand of graying,
middle-aged prisoners who were
arrested in their teens. No
different from todays
generation, the lack of maturity
caused them to believe they
would still be young upon their
return to society. Diana Ortiz
earned her GED, and a
bachelors and masters degrees.
New York State Parole Board
received hundreds of letters on
her behalf, attesting to her
rehabilitation. She was turned
out by her 36-year old boyfriend
who introduced her to heroin.
Prostitution and robbing tricks
supported their habit. After
getting into the off-duty police
officers car under the pretense
she would perform oral sex for
$25.00, Ortiz jumped out of the
parked car and was running
down the street while her
boyfriend and an accomplice got
into a scuffle with the officer and
shot him. Upon receiving a date
at her third hearing, Ortiz now
works with Exodus Transition
Community, assisting ex-offenders
reintegrate back into society. In Illinois,
Valerie Mays has more years to serve. In
Pennsylvania, Stacey Torrance was 14
when he was sentenced to life without
parole. Hes now in his 30s and the
years keep piling. Tamika Bell was 16
and the list goes on. The faces of youth
aging invisibly. Dont get played for your
life chasing them corners of colors. There
are no do-overs in the DOC.
The D.O.C. and the Mirage of Youth

Hey Love, I'm glad you made it. Damn! You're gorgeous,
How about we go inside; they're probably waiting for us.
"Mr. Semaj Thomas: party of two."
Upon us answering and walking up, the hostess beams at you.

We're led to a table adjacent to a piano,
Petals of roses serve as a bed for several upright candles.
Albeit, we've dined many times, tonight I'm nervous,
I'm concealing the butterflies by remaining calm on the surface.

We eat, and we drink; we talk, and laugh,
Thank you Lord for revealing to me, my better half.
Since I love seeing your eyes closed as you sway right to left,
Unbeknownst to you, I gave the Pianist a request.

Once he finished his last line, you found me kneeling at your
side,
Holding a blue, velvet box with your dream ring inside.
"Love, you already wear many hats within my life,
But I need you to don another; will you be my wife?"

Though tears flowed from your eyes, I felt extremely blessed,
'Cause your response was a calming-breathing-out-smiling-
"Yes!"
Everyone clapped as we stood and exchanged I love you's,
The maitre d' photographed us kissing and proposed a toast too.

We then danced for a while; basking in the moment,
You're proof; God has fully accepted my atonement.
I woke up from this dream, having to write this down for you,
The only thing left, is for us to experience de' ja`vu......

While my body was winding down, preparing for a night's rest,
An invasion of thoughts tapped my spirit to co-pilot the flesh.
Now I'm ushering in the month of Black History,
It's fascinating - the youth deems the heritage, a mystery.

As I contemplate the slate of the greats of my race,
Triumphs were birthed by staring trials and tribulations in the face.
We're a people of faith, integrity, and resilience,
With an innate, candid supply in regards to brilliance.

Influencing each other with the goal of being affluent,
Viewing constructive criticism as Success' conduit.
But somewhere along the way - maybe the lack of desperation
Caused a growing momentum to give way to that of stagnation.

Hailing the nonsense televised; chasing a false prize,
Unknowingly setting the stage for our own genocide.
Unfortunately, we've made a psychic of W.E.B. DuBois,
10% carries the burdens, and they're doing it with poise.

What's the straw that breaks the camel's back?
Is it the drug addictions, jails, deaths, or watching yourself slip
through the cracks?
If one were to ask me, I'd say all of the above,
What would God see after wiping across our lives with white
gloves?

I'm trying to hear, "Well done; My good and faithful servant,
You used your talents dutifully via a strategic purpose."
Ladies and gentlemen; please fortify your brains,
Don't let the efforts of our dearly departed be in vain.

Here's a prophecy: "Mediocrity begets poverty,
A sure way to get behind a door that's locked without a key."
Take heed: Let education be your foundation,
Stay on the straight and narrow with Success being the destination.

If it's not conducive to your plight, extract it from your sight,
Is it not a folly to engage a brick wall in a fight?
Take this month to reflect; but come March 1st.,
Success is the best revenge - so start hitting them where it hurts......

exception of those upon whose light and
gravity we depend. The earth is hurtling
through space at thousands of miles per
hour and appears to be headed nowhere in
particular.
The same analogy applies to our
lives as individuals. We represent an
amalgamation of biology, culture, time,
and place, with no particular significance
attributable to any of these
components. The only thing that is special
about any of us is our uniqueness with
regard to others, which is only a matter of
degree.Dig deep enough into our
ontological dilemma and the evidence of
cosmic chaos is overwhelming. In the face
of it, people find comfort in an illusion of
permanency, which seems highly
preferable to any objective recognition of
how much our lives are influenced by
chance. In a universe disorder
rules, our lives amount to nothing more
than a posture we assume, and yet, as
individuals we feel that our lives represent
the ground zero of meaningful experience.
In one sense, what we do means nothing,
but in another sense, it can mean
everything.
In his book An Appetite for
Wonder: The Making of a Scientist,
Richard Dawkins writes about how,
because of timing, something as simple as
a sneeze can have a domino effect on the
future. A personal example brought this
home to me recently. I intended to call a
friend one day, but I didnt. Some hours
later, that friend was killed in a traffic
accident. Now, Im reasonably sure that if
I had phoned him as Id intended, he
would still be alive because he would not
have been at the intersection at the
moment the accident happened. A matter
Were All Born to Deny Reality
Its not denial. Im just selective about the reality I accept.
-Bill Watterson, author of comic strip Calvin and Hobbs
Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one. " Albert Einstein

1

If you doubt that were born to deny
reality, youre actually proving the point.
The evidence is indisputable that we
human beings have built-in reality
buffers. We smoke, drink, overeat, waste
resources, and engage in every possible
kind of risk-taking activity, oblivious to
or disregarding the likely results of our
actions.
At the core of our tendency to
deny reality is the barefaced inevitability
of our own death. Unless we are
threatened with imminent annihilation or
given a short time to live, we are
predisposed to perceive of the future as
something open-ended and unlimited,
regardless of our age. We are loath to
admit our existence is finite.
A recent entry in examining our
pronounced ability for deceiving
ourselves is Denial: Self-Deception,
False Beliefs, and the Origins of the
Human Mind by Ajit Varki and Danny
Brower. These authors contend that the
ability to deny reality is the very
psychological mechanism that has made
our survival possible and that optimism
is indeed a strategy for denial.
Back in 1974, Ernest Becker won the
Pulitzer Prize for The Denial of Death,
an examination of our propensity for
self-deception about our own mortality.
Looking deeply into our
existential predicament is a sobering
experience. Our sun is a second-rate star
in a modest galaxy, where no one thing
or location can be deemed more
important than any otherwith the
3
of a few seconds would have changed the
outcome.
We can speculate ad nauseam, but trying
to mentally reverse past events is both
futile and counterproductive. If I had
called my friend as planned, it may indeed
have changed the course of his behavior
and avoided the accident. Such lines of
thinking are seductive, but they always
reach a dead-end and encourage magical
thinking.
Im not in any way suggesting
that we are responsible for unknowable
future events. Only in hindsight can
events appear inevitable. The present is
rife with chaotic possibilities. To the
contrary, thinking through hypothetical
situations can help us inoculate ourselves
against comforting illusions that shelter us
from seeing just how precariously our
lives depend upon luck.
My sense is that everything does
happen for any number of reasons, but
nothing can happen in the lives of human
beings that cannot be altered by chance.
We are bound together in a chain of
chaotic events so seamlessly connected
that they appear tranquil right up to the
moment when reality crashes the party.
By design, our brains impose a sense of
order on a world driven by mayhem.
Its easy to appreciate how
illusions have helped us survive.
Evolution equipped us for self-deception
in part so that we would readily take risks
without calculating our chances of
success. Obviously this approach has
worked.In centuries past, illusions have
aided our survival, but now were
speeding forward without questioning our
assumptions. Because of our burgeoning
numbers, the future, if we are to have one,
demands that we trade our illusions for
objectivity. What helped us thrive as a
species in the distant past now threatens
our very existence.

Id like to share with you what I know about the benefits
of having a good credit score. I will explain here how having a
good credit score can help you and how having a bad one can
hurt you. According to the Consumer Financial Report, There are
over 40 million people who have items in collections that are
stated on their credit report. These items on ones credit report
can result in a person having a poor credit score. A poor credit
score can disqualify a person from getting employment, certain
loans, housing, etc. The financial crisis of 2008 and the
economical downturn we are still experiencing (Not to mention
the high unemployment rate) are partially responsible for this
problem. It is difficult for people to pay their current and
mounting bills. Addressing the items that are already in
collections is even more difficult.
However with all of that said, there are numerous
solutions for whatever consumers may have in collections, which
has been identified on their credit report. Debt consolidation is an
option. There are many companies that will help you pay off your
bills by paying pennies on the dollar of what you owe.
Companies agree to do this because they would rather make
some money, than nothing. More than likely, the company has
already written off what you owe them as a loss. Companies will
use that loss to get a deduction on their total tax bill at the end of
the year. So to get a percentage of the debt back from you will be
all profit for themit becomes a win/win situation. You get
your bills paid off for a fraction of the cost and the creditors
make some profit from a debt they already wrote off. Another
option is to work with a credit consultant or credit attorney. They
will work with the credit agencies in helping you to get your debt
removed according to the "Fair Credit reporting Act."
The point is that having bad credit is not the end of the
world. You must take the responsibility to improve your credit
score. You will find that the benefits of having a good credit
score are endless.

Update:
The appellate court ruled the lyrics should never have been admitted into evidence, as they were highly prejudicial.
We have a significant doubt about whether the jurors would have found defendant guilty if they had not been
required to listen to the extended reading of these disturbing and highly prejudicial lyrics, the majority opinion
stated.

As the op-ed pointed out, Skinners case is not unique. Last year, the American Civil Liberties Union of New
Jersey found that in 18 cases in which various courts considered the admissibility of rap as evidence, the lyrics
were allowed nearly 80 percent of the time. The problem with this is, as one study has pointed out, participants shown a set of a
hypothetical young black males violent, sexually explicit rap lyrics were significantly more likely to believe the man was capable of
committing a murder than those who were not shown such lyrics. http://yourlegallady.com/2014/02/03/the-prejudicial-effect-of-using-rap-lyrics-as-

By KIMBERLY HEFLING
WASHINGTON (AP) The Obama administration is urging
schools to abandon overly zealous discipline policies that civil
rights advocates have long said lead to a school-to-prison pipeline
that discriminates against minority students.
The wide-ranging series of guidelines issued in essence tells
schools that they must adhere to the principle of fairness and
equity in student discipline or face strong action if they don't. The
American Civil Liberties Union called the recommendations
"ground-breaking."
"A routine school disciplinary infraction should land a student in
the principal's office, not in a police precinct," Attorney General
Eric Holder said.
Holder said the problem often stems from well intentioned "zero-
tolerance" policies that too often inject the criminal justice system
into the resolution of problems. Zero-tolerance policies often spell
out uniform and swift punishment for offenses such as truancy,
smoking or carrying a weapon. Violators can lose classroom time
or become saddled with a criminal record.
The administration said research suggests the racial disparities in
how students are disciplined are not explained by more frequent
or more serious misbehavior by students of color.
"In our investigations, we have found cases where African-
American students were disciplined more harshly and more
frequently because of their race than similarly situated white
students," the Justice and Education departments said in a letter to
school districts. "In short, racial discrimination in school
discipline is a real problem."
Daniel A. Domenech, executive director of the School
Superintendents Association, acknowledged that students of color
were being suspended and expelled in disproportionate numbers.
2
In American schools, black students without disabilities were
more than three times as likely as whites to be expelled or
suspended, according to government civil rights data collection
from 2011-2012. Although black students made up 15 percent of
students in the data collection, they made up more than a third of
students suspended once, 44 percent of those suspended more
than once and more than a third of students expelled.
More than half of students involved in school-related arrests or
referred to law enforcement were Hispanic or black, according to
the data.
According to Domenech, "Superintendents recognize that out-of-
school suspension is outdated and not in line with 21st-century
education. The new recommendations encourage schools to
ensure that all school personnel are trained in classroom
management, conflict resolution and approaches to de-escalate
classroom disruptions.
Among the other recommendations:
Ensure that school personnel understand that they are
responsible for administering routine student discipline instead of
security or police officers.
Draw clear distinctions about the responsibilities of school
security personnel.
Provide opportunities for school security officers to develop
relationships with students and parents.
Education Secretary Arne Duncan has acknowledged the
challenge is finding the balancing act to keep school safe and
orderly. But, he said that, "we need to keep students in class
where they can learn."

THE MYTH SHATTERING
BOOK YOU CANT AFFORD
NOT TO READ!

BY AKBAR PRAY
In loving memory of my mother Mary Morse
Sunrise: 08-27-1960 Sunset: 01-31-2014.
"Rest Momma Rest"
Sleep momma
I'm certain that is what's best for you
Seeing that God's labor for you has been done
There is truly nothing left to do
...So you rest now momma
Let your eye-lids reap what's perceptual
And I promise no more music or video games
That your sleep, it will be impeccable
---And the mental anguish..
. It will all subside ---
And that tire-some adversity....
It will be stripped of a stride
Being that the harvest of your sleep
In deed... It's supplied
...So you rest momma rest
---Don't be nudged by my political satire
By contiguous loudmouths in pursuit of a sapphire
---Let your first mother---momma
The mother fostered by God
The Earth... Let it be your attire
...And you wear it momma
Every fabric and composition blend
---I want you to wear every fiber
And let there be a fear of your desecrated cloth
You let that be dire
Let's allow the winter to dread you not being warm
Let these liquid drops on your cloth
Not... Come by storm
But is just the reward that is paid by my tears
Just a simple down payment---
That has been earned over the years
...And you rest momma rest
---Take the liberty to do so yourself
...Vest momma vest
Control it...
Until paradise is where you awaken
And let any standard of it outside God's perspective
You let it be forsaken
Until then...
Just sleep, sleep, sleep...
And I'll be consciously aware when I check on you
My motions won't fumble a peep
That the vehicle of my freight won't mumble nor squeak
Then only after I've tidied your flower bed
I'll run back into the street
I'll tackle responsibility at my peak
Exploit obduracy when it's weak
To honestly momma---make that n's meat
Binding my life and my health as my try
So you dream momma dream I
n 50 years or so, I'll awake you when I die

makes dealing with narcotics a seemingly
worthwhile venture to the desperate and
disenfranchised.
At their heights, these man-made panics
have driven cocaines street price up to as
much as $40,000 per ki. I say man-made
as opposed to a natural occurrence causing
the mass destruction of Coca crops over in
South America and affecting the availability
in this country to such a degree that it drives
the prices through the sky. It aint nothin
but game. But that level of game means
decreased availability for people on the
streetin an environment of increased risk.
At the same time, that game has resulted in
greater profits for the many multi-national
conglomerates that are building new prison
facilities in small towns all over the country,
creating jobs and thriving mini economies in
little upstate towns that most of us have
never heard of. And brothers wallowing in
desperation resulting from a lack of quality
education and opportunities in their
communities, frustrated by the day-to-day
strain of hood life, are all but lining up for a
spot in those fine, new facilities; all for
chasing the
dream of curvy
women, quick
cars and lots of
cash.

These processing plants were
set up in small towns largely in the
south-east and often just a few miles
away from the highway. There were
instances where as I drove down I-95,
dubbed the cocaine pipeline, I was
positive that I smelled massive
amounts of acetone. At the time I was
unaware of the plants having been
transplanted to the states but I always
thought that the way the prices had
dropped so drastically from what they
were in 1979 to what they were in
1990, somewhere in the processing
something had changed. I was sure that
the work was being done in the states
by this time but I, like the rest of
America, was oblivious to the
transplanting that had occurred.
Cocaine has been illegal for over
90 years, deemed so after falling from
grace as the wonder drug used to
treat Asthma, digestive disorders and
morphine addiction. And most
Americans have heard that cocaine was
used in Coca-Cola prior to the
enactment of the Harrison Act in 1914
after coca was deemed a narcotic.
Meanwhile, back on the street,
when the material (cocaine and heroin)
got cheaper it also began to get weaker,
we had to hustle harder, only to make
as much money as we used to, then the
material got even weaker and we had
to hustle harder still, only to make less.
I dont believe that at any point nature
2
decided to produce a less potent strain of
the plants from which Heroin and
Cocaine come. I suspect that the
processing labs, where those plants are
converted to their narcotic forms, are
where those changes are occurring.
Some people might assume that the
Drug-Lords of Europe, South America,
the Middle East and Asia just got
greedier, and decided that they would
make more money off of less material,
and those who assume this may be
partially correct but let me point out two
things: the first is that the Drug-Lords
are not hurting for material or money. I
mean, lets face it, in some countries the
stuff grows wildly out of the ground.
Second, I think they would have
continued to flood this country with the
highest-grade product they could
possibly produce, until the sun itself
burned outwhat do they care about the
people in America going to prison at an
unbelievable rate or dying slow,
agonizing deaths from using drugs? Id
venture to entertain that there was a new
arrangement thrust upon the foreign
Drug-Lords by their greedier North
American counter-parts, the ones whose
jobs are made easier and whose political
careers are furthered through better
public image. Better public images are
made possible when less drugs (at a
higher profit margin) are let onto to the
streets. The desired result is that it looks
as though They give a fuck about the
masses. You may have heard about this
arrangement, its often referred to as,
The War on Drugs.
The prices of drugs on the street are
often manipulated through panic
tactics. That means that material is being
held back in order to drive the price up,
to maintain a market plus-point that

Im not sure exactly where it begins or even when it began, but I know that somehow it
has become an epidemic of great proportions with all woman all over the globe. It is
called the war among yourselves. you see it has been proven by many very prestigious
universities within the United States that woman hate themselves and also hate on each
other Can this phenomenon be blamed on society or family structure or stress or just
the simple because factor? The answer is no, it can only be blamed on one thing: you
are made that way.
Study show that although men are intelligent in many things they are lazy. They really do
not have to work hard to get a woman because men fuck anything. If you put some soft
wet mud, theyll say wow its wet and warm and put it in, and enjoy themselves. On the
other hand, women have to over analyze everything. Ladies, men think in pairs,
commonly two things at a time. They live in the moment and for now. Whereas you
ladies carry a shit load of drama yours and everyone elses, because at one point
something or someone told you, that you where powerful and you can do it all.
Meanwhile youre wondering why is he ignoring me or why is he not attracted to me?
Well ladies let me break it down: when a man says youre pretty you say no, Im getting
old or I have too much makeup on. If he says you look nice in that dress, you say no Im
too fat. When he says you have nice legs you say no, I have these spider veins or my
knees are fat or Im blotted. If they say oh your hair looks good, you go on and say no, I
have to get it done etc. Etc. etc. You ladies find every excuse to sabotage yourselves. You
see a man is a scavenger. He will lay his head wherever he can, as long as he does not
have to work hard for it. Im not implying that they are not good providers. They are just
lazy with words and emotions, whereas you ladies sometimes do not understand is that
the man can care less if you have droopy tits, a saggy ass or a limp leg. When a man is
with you most of the time he is into the bush, the hell with everything else. By putting
yourself down the bush can become unattractive. He dont care if you fat, but you do, so
then he starts to see it as well and begins to live your drama, then it becomes a problem
so what do you do? Just leave him the fuck alone, if a man is cleaning up your garage or
cleaning the basement leave him alone, dont go down there or where he is at and say, oh
Im checking and when your done can you do this for me. Just leave him the fuck alone.
Let him finish doing what he started, then thank him and ask for something else. Ladies
remember while you are worrying about the world men are only worrying about making
money and getting laid. The comforts that you create for him are only compromised when
you start looking at yourselves like youre not good enough. Remember ladies a man can
be intellectually forth coming, but emotionally he is as limited as a dog.
A mans ego needs to be nurtured, stroked, and pacified so that he will not feel
emasculated in any way. So ladies before you start thinking and judging your mind and
body for a man, think twice before you speak, for they may be your last word he will ever
listen too.
Girls, Young Ladies and Women!

You can search throughout the entire universe
for someone who is more deserving of your love
and affection than you are yourself, and that
person is not to be found anywhere. You, yourself,
as much as anybody in the entire universe,
deserve your love and affection.

Earlier in my life, during a panic in Harlem, a time
when there were no drugs available, I noticed an
overnight transformation of everyone that was using
drugs. With the sudden absence of drugs the drug
addicts patterns of behavior were disrupted. Suddenly
their lives had no purpose. It was as if they were
sleeping and suddenly woke up to find a world they
had lost touch with. They had money in their pockets
but nothing to spend it on. It made no sense to go out
hustling and committing crimes because the motive
was gone for taking the risk that had become
routine. Guys, and girls, just sat around and started
drinking beer and wine. Their libidos, long

suppressed, kicked in. They now had time to talk and
pursue other interest; Lust, dancing, sports, all the
long forgotten interest that normal people
pursue. Food tasted good again. They emerged from
the poppy fields. This lasted for as long as the panic
lasted. Then slowly they drifted back. Not all. Some
never looked back; all they needed was that glimpse of
reality to come to their senses. They found jobs, went
back home, and reconnected to their lives. Those that
found nothing to replace their bondage with returned
to the poppy fields. The pain of being irrelevant was
assuaged by the "wonder drug" heroin...sleep.
