“Make Show-and-Tell Cool Again”: Digital Storytelling

Change your students' learning experiences by tapping into the wonderful world of Media Liter-
acy. This workshop is designed for teachers who are interested in using digital storytelling both
in their teaching and to meet curriculum expectations from various subject areas through stu-
dent presentations. We will investigate websites such as Flickr and YouTube and how these
sites can be used in conjunction with Microsoft Photo Story 3 or Windows Movie Maker; for
teachers: to add visual enhancements to lessons; for students: to add engagement and creativity
in their presentations. Use digital storytelling to help make learning fun!

Workshop Overview
Why Digital Story Telling?
Digital stories derive their power by weaving images, music, narrative and voice together,
thereby giving deep dimension and vivid color to characters, situations, experiences, and in-
sights.

In this workshop, you will:

• Review the Acceptable Use Policy and Creative Commons Licenses
• Manage your projects on your computer through folder organization
• Search and find photos using Flickr, the online photo sharing website and/or use a digi-
tal camera to take one’s own pictures
• Download and save images to your computer
• Use Microsoft Photo Story 3 or Windows Movie Maker to import photos, add anima-
tions and effects, add narration and background music
• Edit and present a final product
• Learn how to upload videos to YouTube in order to celebrate your students’ work

Acceptable Use Policy
Take a look at you school board’s policy for online rules and ediquette with the purpose of cre-
ating and maintaining an effective and safe electronic learning environment for students.

Ultimately, even with a school board’s firewall software, it is always

possible for students to unintentionally come across inappropriate
material when on the web. Educating students on how to handle
themselves in these situations is the best way to deal with this issue,
not banning students from using the technology!

If students come across inappropriate material, teach them to:

• Quickly move to a different webpage

• Not to make a scene
• Inform the teacher of the incident

* Teachers should never make a scene of unintentional discoveries that are inappropriate. Sim-
ply inform students to be wise for what they are searching for, use prudent words in the key-
word searches, and quickly and quietly move away from any inappropriate material that they
may access.

Task #1: Folder Organization
It is always best to organize your work space and set up needed folders before
beginning a new project. This will save you time by helping to cut down on
missing files, forgotten file locations, and broken links. In this first task, you
will create several folders on your h: drive where you will save you work.

• Open up My Documents
• Create new folder (to create a new folder, right-click on the screen, click on New ->
Folder and type in the title: call this folder “My Digital Stories”)
• Open your “My Digital Stories” folder
• Create three more folders (these will be subfolders to the main folder called My Digi-
tal Stories) titled “Images”, “Digital Story Files”, and “Completed Videos”

Task #2: Download/Take Photos and Save to Computer
In this second task, you will save a small bank of pictures that you will use to create your Digi-
tal Story.

Option #1: Use the digital camera to take photos

Option #2: Download photos from the Flickr website at www.flickr.com
• To save photos taken from the camera, connect the camera to the computer and copy
all photos to you “Images” folder
• When using Flickr, to ensure that you are not using images that are copyright protected,
click on “Advanced Search” and check the “Only search within Creative Commons-
licensed photos” button
• Search for photos using a keyword search - To save photos from the Flickr website,
click on the image to download a larger copy, right-click on the image and select “Save
Image As”. Save the image in your “Images” folder.
• Save or create 15-20 images

The content of the photos is up to you. If you are searching for photos on Flickr, try these sam-
ple topics (and keywords):

• Ancient Egypt: Egypt, pyramids, sphinx, mummy

• Cell Division: Mitosis, plant cell, animal cell
• Prime Ministers of Canada: try any name
• Religion – try religious terms

Task #3: Create Digital Story
You are now ready to begin the creative process. In this third task, you will use either
Microsoft Photo Story or Windows Movie Maker to import you pictures and create your Digital
Story.

Option #1: Using Microsoft PhotoStory

Step #1 – Import Pictures

• Open Microsoft Photo Story 3
• Select “Begin a New Story” -> “Next”
• Click “Import Pictures” and find the “Images” folder where all your picture files are
kept
• Select all the pictures in the folder – you can select all the pictures by holding down the
CTRL button while you click on each of the pictures with your mouse

Step #2 – Edit Pictures

At this point, you will need to edit your picture using the editing toolbar

• Explore each editing tool

• Click on the “Edit” button on the editing toolbar
• Crop your pictures by using the “Remove Black Borders…” feature

• Use the Crop and Rotate features to crop your picture

• Click on the “Autofix” tab to experiment with the options provided
• Click on the “Add Effect” tab to experiment with different colour effects for your pic-
tures (notice the check box that allows you to apply selected effects to all pictures in
your digital story)
• Scroll through each picture and experiment with various edits and effects

Notice that you can easily scroll through you pictures when in the edit menu by using the back
and forward arrows

• Click “Next” – add titles to you images if you choose – you also have the ability to
change the colour effects for each photo on this screen using the drop down menu be-
low the picture

Step #3 – Add Animation and Narration

• Click “Next”
• Click on the Red record button to record your narration – continue speaking while you
click on the next image to continue the narration to the next image (remember that the
narration is recorded to each picture so when editing, you only need to re-record over
any mistakes, not the whole narration!)
• Customize the animation of each image

clicking on “Specify start and end position” will allow you to edit where the
focus of the animation will be
Click on the transition tab and select different transitions for each of the picture

Notice that each editing window had a “Preview” button allowing you to previous your story!

Step #4 – Add Background Music

Click “Next”
Option #1: Click “Create Music” to add some basic sounds to each picture separately
Option #2: Click “Select Music” to add a music file already found on your computer

You can use sites such as http://freesound.iua.upf.edu/ to download music and sound under the
Creative Commons license

Step #5 – Save you File into a Video Format

• Click “Next”
• Select “Save your story for playback on your computer”
• Click on browse, change the file name and save the video to your “Completed Videos”
folder.

Option #2: Using Windows Movie Maker

Begin by selecting either "Storyboard" view or "Timeline" View - for more editing options, use
"Timeline" view

Step #1 – Import Pictures

• Open Windows Movie Maker

• Click “Import Pictures” on the task pane and find the “Images” folder where all your pic-
ture files are kept
• Select all the pictures in the folder – you can select all the pictures by hold-
ing down the CTRL button while you click on each of the pictures with your
mouse
• The imported pictures are added to your Movie Maker library
• Drag each of the pictures from your library into the timeline and arrange
the order by draging them in the correct position

Step #2 – Add Background Music

• Click “Import Music” to add a music file already found on your computer
• You can use sites such as The Freesound Project, ccMixter, and Find-
Sounds to download music and sound under the Creative Commons license
• Any imported sounds are added to your Movie Maker library
• Drag any of the sounds from your library into the timeline and position the
sound to where you want it to begin playing

Step #3 – Add video

• Click “Import Video” to add any video file already found on your
computer

• You can download any video for free use that are covered under the
Creative Commons license
• Any imported videos are added to your Movie Maker library
• Drag any of the video from your library into the timeline and position the
sound to where you want it to begin playing

Step #4 – Add Animation and Narration

• Click on the microphone in the timeline to record your narration – as you record your voice,
the preview window will play the video to show you the slide transitions (remember that the
narration is recorded as a separate entity and is not connected directly to the images)
• Save the Narration to your "Sounds" folder
• Customize the animation of each image:
1. Click on Tasks and in the Tasks Pane, select "Edit Movie"
2. You have two options - "View Video Effects" and "View Video Transitions"
3. Find the video transitions you want and connect them to an image by draging the
transition to the appropriate image
4. Find the video effect(s) you want and connect them to an image by draging the
effect between two images
5. Experiment with different video effects and video transitions
6. At any time, you can preview your digital story by clicking on the "Play" buuton
on the preview window

Step #5 – Save you File into a Video Format

• Click "File" -> "Save Movie File"

• Select “My Computer” and then "Next"
• Name your file, change the file name and save the video to your “Completed Videos”
folder.
• Click "Next" two more times and your digital story will be saved to your computer

Task #4: Upload Video to YouTube

Use YouTube to celebrate student work – students are much more cognizant of the quality of
their work, and feel that their work is important, if they know that they work will be made
available for anyone on the world to see. In this task, you will publish you video to YouTube.

• Go to www.youtube.com
• Sign up for a free YouTube account (if you are not comfortable giving your personal
information, use a pseudonym)
• Log into you account and click “Upload Videos”
• Follow the steps outlined on the website: Title, Description, Tag (taxonomy), Video
Category, and Language – then click “Continue Uploading”
• Click “Browse” and find your completed Digital Story in your “Completed Videos”
folder
• Click “Upload Video”

Congratulations: you are sharing your Digital Story with the world!
