is an inherently fun album, for the most part at least.Growing up in Minas Gerias amidst the drums of Afro-Brazilianreligion Candomble, eerie Christian chants and melancholic localfolklore has clearly had an influenced on Celia and her music bearsthe proof.She often goes under the moniker ‘bastardista’, the music being her bastard offspring.On the track ‘Nana Buruke’ gospel choruses rub up against lingeringguitar riffs, while on ‘Ilegal da Geladeria’ it’s computer effects and thewonderfully Brazilian sound of the cuica.Elsewhere there hints of reggaeton, punk, samba-funk and Spanishpop with more traditional Brazilian sounds of Brazil popping upthough out.At school, it’s claimed, her gender precluded her from playingpercussion and her class (read wealth) placed other instruments outof her reach. Now she’s getting her own back rattling through a longlist of instruments and drawing on a range of sounds.This is one for the hostels and student halls of Europe and SouthAmerica; Manu Chao meets Yerba Buena meets Carlinhos Brownmeets…
