WHAT IS A HAUNTING?By Andrew Makus
Have you ever walked into a house or a room and had a weird feeling? You can'tdistinguish what that feeling is until you explore it a little more, or that feeling hasprogressed into something more. For the above statement, a feeling is a vague term andcan't be fully explained until it is described with more detail. A feeling can be positive ornegative, soft or hard, cold or hot.So what is a haunting? As a "feeling" is a vague term, so can be a "haunting". It cannot fully beunderstood until it is explained by breaking it down into sub-categories.Generally, a haunting is the occurrence of strange and unexplainable sensory phenomenathat is tied to a specific location or object, such as a house or a piece of jewellery. Attimes haunting’s have been associated with a person. A person can move from one placeto another and still be haunted by an entity. Haunting’s can occur with no set pattern orreason and can also occur at specific times or anniversaries. Haunting’s can involveapparitions, noises, strange smells, sensations of hot or cold and feelings of being watched ortouched. They can be positive or negative in nature. A positive haunting can involve adeceased family member letting you know they are OK and that they are keeping aneye on you. A negative haunting can involve a malevolent spirit, demon or poltergeist.A haunting can be broken down into sub-categories: Intelligent Haunting, ResidualHaunting and even Poltergeist Activity. An Intelligent Haunting is probably the most known type of haunting. In this case the spiritor entity is an "intelligent" presence in the haunted location. It is connected to a place fora specific reason, whether it is a place they lived in, a place a loved one resided in, orsomething emotional holds them there (for example, a murder or unfinished business). The intelligent haunting will interact with the living by appearing to a person, touching aperson, moving objects, making noises, etc. The spirit(s) know what they are doing andare aware of your presence.A Residual Haunting is a recording of a past event that occurs at specific times.Something in the physical structure of the location records and holds bits of informationthat relates to happenings in and around the object, building or location. For example, amurder took place 50 years ago in a house at 3:00 a.m. This murder is re-enacted on itsanniversary at 3:00 a.m. in the same house as it happened 50 years ago. The residualhaunting cannot interact with us; it has no knowledge of our presence or sense of time.Poltergeist Activity can also be a type of haunting. In German, "poltergeist" means "noisy ghost"and can be the most misunderstood type of haunting. Phenomena related to poltergeistactivity can be knocking sounds, unexplainable noises, movement of objects, doorsopening and closing, lights turning on and off, fires and floods breaking out and muchmore. It is usually associated with a negative entity or demon, but researchers today have
