New to SEO? Avoid the Most Common Mistakes
As a newcomer to search engine optimization (SEO) you arelikely experiencing the typical feelings of being overwhelmedby information. Yes – there’s a lot of information out there;and a lot to consider when trying to determine how best tomarket your website. Often, in the face of unfamiliar terrain, those who are new to SEO will engage in some common mis-takes; all undertaken with the best of intentions but which canultimately lead them down the wrong path. Some of thesecommon pitfalls include:
Choosing the Wrong Keywords
As keywords are the heart and soul of an SEO campaign, they need to be chosen carefully. Many people make themistake of choosing words that may be in keeping with thetone of their website but are not likely to be the words usedin a search by their end users. There is no doubt that the ap-propriate keywords are the lynchpin for successful SEO andunfortunately there are a great many website owners who
do not put in the effort necessary to nd the keywords that
will work best for the bigger picture. For example, in terms of your business, you may refer to yourself as an “automotivemechanic” but is this the phrase that your end user is likelyto enter into a search engine? Or are they more likely to usethe phrase “car mechanic?” Appropriate keyword researchwill yield evidence of the best phrases for your campaign andthose phrases that are most often used in similar searches.
Keyword Stufng
So now that your research has generated the appropriatekeywords for your campaign, be careful not to use them toomuch! One of the other traps that many people fall into whenthey begin their SEO campaign is to overuse their keywords.
Flagrant overuse of keywords is a big red ag to the search
engines and can even cause your site to be penalized. Plus, this approach is simply bad marketing in terms of reachingyour target audience. The goal of online marketing is to getpeople to your site; once you get them there you don’t want to
immediately turn them off with difcult to read, oversolicitous
content.
Reciprocal Linking
Swapping links used to be the hot thing in SEO but it has goneby the wayside. In fact, reciprocal linking is now frowned uponby the search engines. They recognized that often these linkswere not relevant and were only done to increase popularityof the site and help search engine page rankings climb as aresult. Instead, today’s successful SEO campaigns include acomprehensive – and relevant – incoming link strategy.
Going It Alone
Too many people choose to go it alone in SEO, thinking thatthey can save some money and still get their site the rank-
ings they want; the point of which is to increase website trafc.
