Midnight in Times Square

SAW the New Year 1982 in Times Square, 32 years ago. I was new in town and staying at the Times Square Motor Inn, on 43rd Street, next to the old New York Times building. From my window on the 10th floor I had a fine view of the Broadway/43rd Street intersection, which is where the ball is actually dropped. Also in view was the Nathans Famous restaurant with time and temperature. It was cold that winter, many overnight lows were 20OF. I was warm. New York steam heat was so abundant that I would sit at the desk next

to the open window and the sub-zero breeze was pleasantly cool at a distance of 18 inches. Its all gone. Nathans is now the big NASDAQ sign, the Motor Inn are now condos. The NY Times moved to a new building a decade ago. The building where they drop the ball, and where the famous zipper still runs, that island in the middle of the road, was itself the first New York Times building. The Times gave its name not only to Longacre Square (the previous name) but also to the typeface I use in this newsletter: Times Roman. Aside from romantic fancy, there is no reason to think midnight is the start of anything. The start of the astrological day is sunrise. We should all get up early on Wednesday and welcome the first solar rays of the New Year. The start of the civil day remains noon. Its come to my attention the famous 5 Borough Incorporation chart for New York, set for 0 hours on January 1, 1898, is a noon, not midnight chart, and the proof aside from the legal definition of the day itself, which we wont bother with is the position of the Moon, which shifted from aggressive Aries to greedy Taurus and in the process also came to symbolize New Yorks many parks. I may get to this in a week or two.

Abscesses. Disordered blood is generally denoted by afflictions in or about 25O Leo-Aquarius and 21O Aries-Libra. Venus is nearly always in affliction with a malefic. Abscesses in the ears are accompanied by afflictions in 3O Aries-Libra; in the neck, in Taurus-Scorpio, especially about the 16th degree.1 1 In all cases where these special degrees are mentioned in connection with certain characteristics, pathological or otherwise, the student is asked to bear in mind that they may be brought into action by being bracketed between two bodies; that is to say, two bodies will fall exactly on each side of the degree in question at a distance of a few degrees on either hand. Such mid-points are recognized in modern astrology as being important. Absentmindedness follows from Mercury afflicted by Jupiter, or a Jovian Sign, or by Neptune. The classic example is Sir Isaac Newton, in whose horoscope Mercury was in Sagittarius afflicted from Pisces. Encyclopaedia of Psychological Astrology, by Charles E.O. Carter. Buy

BRUT AL
DANE RUDHYAR
This by itself should give pause to the 1:00 = 1:00 am crowd. But we may dismiss this and instead go look for a generally accepted midnight time reference. Which would be a mechanical clock of some kind, Paris in the year of Rudhyars birth having only rudimentary electricity. Regrettably, Paris has never had a notable clock, so far as I am aware. Rouen, down river from Paris on the Seine, has had a famous one-handed horologe since 1409. Inside the Cathedral of Strasbourg there have been a series of elaborate astronomical clocks, the first dating from 1352, the current (3rd) from 1842. This clock sounds the hour, but is notably silent from 6 pm to the next morning (so says my reference), which presumably means 6 am, thus symbolising man who sleeps and does not work during the night. (From The Astronomical Clock of the Cathedral of Strasbourg, by Theodore Ungerer, published by Societe dEdition de la Basse-Alsace, Strasbourg, 1962. In my possession.) While it sounds the quarter-hour, the clocks primary display is, can you guess, at noon, local time. Nevermind that, until the invention of gas lamps, the horologe at Rouen could not be seen at night, presuming its chimes rang at night. There is also a clock on the exterior of the south transept in Strasbourg, but it has never attracted attention and might not actually be in service, as no one paid it any attention when I was there in the mid-70s. It did not sound the hour. Paris has an observatory. Observatories are known for their meridian lines, which is to say, a south-facing window that admits a shaft of light which, as it moves across the room from west to east during the day, determines noon, and, during the course of the year, as the bottom of that shaft of light moves further away from or closer to the window itself, determines the day of the year. Sunlight and the earths movements determine the time. They are also used to confirm the accuracy of the calendar. ASTROLOGERS NEED TO GET THIS RIGHT. We may not simply presume that 1:00 means 1:00 am or that 18:37 means 6:37 pm, when it may well mean 6:37 am the next morning. BIRTH CERTIFICATES ARE

Shall I become poor, and how?

F wealth is not shown to be probable, poverty is to be guarded against if the malefics are in the 2nd and retrograde, intercepted or afflicting the ruler of the 1st or 2nd or the benefics or Fortuna; or if there are several planets in the 2nd dissipating the finances by bad aspect to the malefics and no mutual reception to get them out of the purse and lessen the drain. Mars or the Sun afflicted in the 2nd will waste the assets. Pisces and the 12th House have much to do with need, and if the ruler of the 2nd is afflicted in this house or Sign, there will be time of need: especially if the Part of Fortune is in the 12th House or the 12th Sign Pisces or the Pisces decanate of Cancer or Scorpio and afflicting the Ascendant, its ruler or a planet there. The ruler of the 2nd in the 2nd (of a poverty chart) shows loss of money through misguided management, or a sale at no profit. In the 3rd, financial loss through documents and personal contacts. In the 4th, through unproductive land deals or loans to relatives. In the 5th, by gambling, speculation, loans to children or in entertainment projects, or by joint ownerships. In the 6th, through illness and loss of work; servants & tenants, and small animals. In the 7th, by partnerships, marriage, the law and war service. In the 8th, through unfair settlements or by Wills. In the 9th, by insurance. In the 10th, by lack of employment. In the 11th by demotions, lack of a sponsor, lost wages, or taking poor advice. In the 12th by mistakes & sharp practice. Simplified Horary Astrology, 1960. Buy

ANE RUDHYAR was born on March 23, 1895, in Paris. The time on the birth certificate has been taken to be 1:00 am. Sagittarius rising, yes, that sounds like the Dane. Where is Jupiter, the ruler? I found it in Gemini in the 7th. No. I immediately threw the chart away. While it is true that he had five wives (or was it four?) and while this is indicative of unstable Gemini and Jovian abundance and while I presume he convinced himself (he rectified the time of birth to 12:42 am), the critical factor, the tell, is that you did not know he had five (or four) wives. I did not know. No one knew, except biographers who have to keep track of that sort of thing. And that is the key factor. We are known by the house that contains the ruler of our ascendant. I am, you are, everyone is. If Rudhyar had his ruler in the 7th, and if it was Jupiter, then, if Robsons Astrology and Sex is any guide, we would expect him to carry on like Groucho Marx and Margaret Dumont, as they played out a debilitated Jupiter in the 7th in their many movies together. Additionally, we are known by the house (primary) and the sign (secondarily) of our Sun and Moon. At 1:00 am, Rudhyar has a 3rd house Sun, which make him intelligent, and, in Aries, which makes him eager. At 1:00 am, Rudhyar has an intercepted Moon in Aquarius in the second, which makes him a frustrated seeker of values. Frustrated because the Moon has no anchor to a house cusp. AstroDataBank reports Rudhyars birth certificate to be in the possession of the Didier Geslain archive. At the top of the page ADB gives the time as 01:00 (= 01:00 AM ), which implies the certificate says simply 1:00 and that ADB presumes that to mean one hour after midnight. In the Source Notes section, ADB bluntly says the BC says 1:00 am, which is not supported by ADBs earlier note. Details! Every time I am confronted with the am/ pm problem, my investigation produces an ever clearer, and, I regret say, always identical result. Which is a day that starts at NOON, never midnight. The civil day starts at noon. The legal day starts at noon. Birth certificates are legal documents issued by a civil authority.

Legal documents are set in CIVIL TIME, civil time, unless otherwise expressly noted, is still based on a NOON-TIME START TO THE DAY. HERE this gets brutal is not that you or I have long been mistaken as to when the day started and what the time really was (we are hopeless dweebs, after all), but that our astrological leaders, such as Dane Rudhyar himself, were incapable of reading their own charts. I do not say this lightly, and I regret I have to say it at all. For all the fuss we make about exact chart calculation, we might as well be reading from a pack of playing cards. But does it really matter? If Rudhyar is not reading the chart, then he is working as philosopher (his major at the Sorbonne) and functioning as a life coach. And theres nothing wrong with that. Rudhyar is not a lesser person because of it. Rudhyar created humanistic astrology, which he later made into transpersonal astrology. As an astrologer Rudhyar worked primarily with planetary energies as they expressed themselves through the signs of the zodiac. Judging by the majority of 20th century astrology books, a lot of astrologers have gotten stuck on this level, unable to sense houses, much less make use of them. (There is in addition a notable sub-set who write planetin-house delineations which they then mistake as planet-in-signs. This often happens to the nodes.) Rudhyar himself said he used houses, but there is no evidence he connected house delineations to actual life situations, as I have done. Read his own story of how he came to astrology here. As a life coach Rudhyar was not far removed from the sort of interpretations that Alan Leo sold by mail in the early days of the 20th century. Which can be found, more or less, in the many books that were issued in Leos name. Rudhyar gave it a New Age spin. Leo used the more traditional pull yourself up by your bootstraps, England expects great things of you, etc. Which can be bracing stuff. IME to present Rudhyars real chart, set for 1:00 pm, March 23, 1895, in Paris. Leo rises. This is a leader, one confident of himself. It was only two weeks ago that I gave Robsons description of a Leo rising. Here is part of it: . . . strong broad shoulders; dignified appearance; large bones and muscles; long, strong and straight back; hands large and brown, fingernails with large moons.

Head large, rounded and domed, held erectly. Face round or oval; high forehead; strong chin; curved cheek bones; large mouth, often with down drooping corners; lips held well together. As I said at the time, thats Leonardo. And its Rudhyar, as well. Their faces are nearly identical. We find Rudhyars Sun in Aries in the 9th. Aries is active, the 9th is religion and philosophy, also a life far from ones origins (if nothing interferes); with Leo rising

Rudhyars chart becomes the virtual definition of a New Age leader. Which he was. Leo rising, Sun in the 9th, gives us clues to his self-chosen name. Rudhyar was born Daniel Chennevire. Removal of his left kidney and adrenal gland at age 12 in 1907 disqualified him for military service (in which it seems he had no interest) which was the sole reason he did not perish in World War I along with all the other young men of his generation.

Instead, in 1916 Rudhyar sailed to America, which it seems he never left. His name, Rudhyar, Sanskrit in origin, does not derive from Rudra (Shiva), nor from rudhira (blood), but rudraksha, which Wiki says is a large, evergreen broadleaf tree. The confirmation of this are the seeds, which are used in Hindu rosaries. In renaming himself Rudhyar, he said he was a seed man. Like as not, the French or Latin version of Rudraksha will be Rudhyar, the seed. In advancing the chart by twelve hours, Rudhyars Moon has shifted, from late Aquarius, to zero degrees Pisces. The Moon in Aquarius is essentially aloof and impersonal, not interested in any one person. The Moon in Pisces is overly sensitive to the world around it. In the 8th house, it effortlessly picks up the feelings of those around him. Which is reinforced by the conjunction to Mercury, also in the 8th, where it is inquisitive and probing. Mercury, debilitated in Pisces, is in mutual reception to Jupiter, debilitated in Gemini in the 11th. Which, as Pisces and Gemini are in square, ties the 8th house to the 11th, which we might describe as a probing look (8th house) into the collective (11th) intelligence (Gemini). Mercurys debility and the Moons sensitivity, both due to Pisces, gives an unconscious flavor to the whole, which amounts to a neo-Jungian collective-unconscious point of view. Their position in the 8th makes for life-or-death results. The 8th is the house of intensity and transformation, the eleven others are static by comparison. Moon-Mercury in the 8th, Rudhyar had a penetrating mind. EMINI intercepted in the 11th shows us Rudhyars true children, as Gemini is the sign of children (the 5th is the house of children). Mars, ruler of the sign on the cusp of Rudhyars 5th (Scorpio), transferred children from 5 to 11, but Geminis intercepted state blocked this from coming to Rudhyars or our attention until late in Rudhyars life. As you will read in his biography, after years of obscurity and neglect, in the late 1960s Rudhyar suddenly became an overnight sensation with baby boomers. Henry Weingarten, who was once my boss, became his publisher and an enthusiastic promoter. Henry was fifty years Rudhyars junior. To further our understanding of interceptions, we might speculate that had Gemini not been intercepted, then with the ruler of the 5th in the 11th, Rudhyar might have become famous in the 1930s or 40s, with a generation 20 years younger, rather than 50. out in your head you will find the dynamics tricky, but the concept is clear. The Moon in Pisces is highly sensitive to color and music. Before Rudhyar stumbled into astrology, he was primarily into music with a secondary interest in art. The various pen and ink illustrations in his books are by himself. His earliest writing, age 13, was on Claude Debussy. He initially came to America to premiere his musical compositions. He met up with Alice Bailey as a result of a musical commission from the Theosophical Society. All indicative of a Moon in Pisces. Not Aquarius. With his Sun in the 9th, Rudhyar is of course more interested in philosophical concepts than mundane details, which would be in his (empty) third house. Rudhyars third house has Virgo on the cusp, ruled by a debilitated Mercury in Pisces. This does not make for mastery of details (Virgo), nor (citing the oppositions in my own chart), does it make you go over the details until you might have them right. Note the presence of the south node in the 3rd. Taken as a whole, Rudhyar was not interested in details. Which probably did not work that well for him. O what about the marriages? With Leo rising, Aquarius falls on the 7th house cusp, that of the partner. Aquarius is a collective sign, it is the sign of friends and associates. When Aquarius is here, or when the ruler of the 7th (whatever it is) is in the 11th, there is a tendency to confuse friends with lovers, to not understand the differences between the two. This is not a problem if the native finds partners with a similar point of view. That Rudhyar had multiple marriages hints that he did not wed that kind of woman. If we presume that Rudhyar wed friends, then we might look at the house of friends to find out what kinds they were. It is Mars, ruler of Saturn, that takes us from the 7th to the 11th. Since we have four planets in Gemini and in the 11th, we can assume that not only did Rudhyar have a great many friends, but that they were, collectively, both intelligent (Gemini) as well as youthful, in spirit if not in physical age. As Gemini is intercepted, we would guess that Rudhyar was not initially aware of the number or the diversity of

his friends, and learned by hard experience. With Taurus on the cusp and Venus debilitated in Aries behind it, Rudhyar may have presumed he had pretty (Taurus) but aggressive (Aries) friends. (I base this on a close study of my own interceptions.) In reality, Rudhyars friends were damn dangerous individuals: Pluto, Mars and Neptune all conjunct in the 11th, and in emotionless Gemini, which, to repeat what I have said before, both Robson and myself take to be the cruelest of all signs. Not the sort of people you should want to date! UT this pushes me into speculation as to his previous journeys on this planet. If Rudhyar was born with a tendency to clever but dangerous friends, with connections back to his 8th house of death (Gemini-Pisces mutual reception), as well as the 4th of endings (Venus, ruler of the 11th also ruling the 4th), then, age 12, did he get a kidney infection (kidneys ruled by Venus) to force his exit from France to a country which would not kill him? For France, nation of his birth, would have done exactly that. Did Daniel Chennevire have free will as a living individual, or did Rudhyar make his decisions before his own birth? I find this a fascinating area for further investigation. In the first three decades of the 20th century there was a fad of idealized platonic/ spiritual marriages, which were never to be consummated. I have heard this was the relationship between Alan and Bessie Leo. Rudhyar might have attempted the same. I think this sort of thing to be childish. In Rudhyars case, the 7th house is ruled by Saturn retrograde in Scorpio in the 4th. If the time of 1:00 pm is reasonably accurate (Rudhyars rectification to 12:42 is void if we change the time by twelve hours), Saturn is square the 7th cusp itself. This makes partnerships both compulsive, as well as stressful. Saturn in the 4th, but not in the same sign as its cusp (Libra), when Rudhyar brought his bride home (the 4th is home) there would invariably be unpleasant results. Aquarius and Scorpio both fixed, relationship problems would silently build, until an abrupt snap. Thats the theory at any rate. Anybody know? Venus in the last degree of Aries, Rudhyar liked aggressive women, perhaps to compen-

sate for a Mars in Gemini in the 11th. Aggressive women will want men of equal caliber (a mans man), which Rudhyar was clearly not. Or will want effeminate men they can push around. Which Rudhyar also was not. Rudhyar projected forceful masculinity with his intellect but most likely failed to carry through on a purely physical level. Yes, Rudhyars Mars is conjunct Pluto, making his speech and ideas forceful. But Mars is even more tightly conjunct and applying to Neptune, which takes him in unfocused and unclear directions. Mars ruling the 5th of sex, but from the 11th, he would be a sexy man (Scorpio on the 5th), but he may have had little interest in the physical act itself. A guess would be that if Rudhyar consummated his marriages, that he did not do so very well, and that his first three or four wives left him for that reason. (AstroDataBank says a total of five wives and gives the names of four. Wiki says four wives and gives the names of two of them, though Leyla Raels name is only found in the footnotes at the bottom. His final marriage in 1977, at age 83, would not have had a physical basis.) An 11th house Mars is an aspect of sexual indifference. Note that Saturn in Scorpio also rules Rudhyars 8th house, of married relationships. If Saturn in the 5th and 8th is no to sex, then Saturn retrograde is not no, but hell no, while Saturn retrograde in Scorpio, ruling the 8th, is hell no we wont have sex. A water sign on the 5th house cusp is ordinarily a promise of children, but here, with Mars ruling from the opposite side of the chart and from infertile Gemini, with both Uranus and Saturn adding their influence, the result, so far as I can tell, was no children from any of his wives. Dane Rudhyar is well-known to many of you. I came to astrology ten years too late to meet both him, as well as Marc Edmund Jones, with whom he was long associated. In writing as freely as I have, I have almost certainly upset a great many people. To all of them, to all of you, my sincere apologies. For another look at Rudhyar, see here. And my best wishes for a more tranquil 2014, though the early predictions are bleak indeed.
