~~ EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH~~ ~~ROTARY BUSINESS~~

Louise Schopke gave the thought for the day and led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance. Frank May, a blast from the past, presided over the festivities in the absence of President Nora. I dont think hes lost a step at all. Special guests today were Christina French of the Moraga Country Club, our Employee of the Month, along with Frank Melon, General Manager of MCC, and her mother April French and brother Will French. Roger Gregory was a guest of the Club for the third time, and has applied for membership, sponsored by Ron Mucovich. Guest Alka Mulakaluri, a visiting Rotarian in the Fremont Club, is considering membership in Moraga Rotary because she lives and works iin Lamorinda now. Our speakers were Bobbie Preston and Kathy Kavanagh of Hospice of the East Bay, and guest and former member Scott Bowhay, a neighbor of Bobbie, also attended. Christina French, on the office staff of Moraga Country Club, was presented as the Employee of the Month by Kevin Reneau and boss Frank Melon, MCC General Manager. Christina and Frank both joined the MCC staff in 2006. She got a nice certificate and some gift cards from local merchants, and her photo was in Lamorinda Weekly. ~~ANNOUNCEMENTS~~ Barbara Bruner met with James Rivers, the head of the Juvenile Hall for girls, to discuss our Christmas stocking project. The stockings are important to the girls and they want it to continue, but decorating has to work around the remedial skills training the girls are now receiving. One possible service project could be to donate backpacks to the girls upon their release from the hall to hold their class materials and personal items.

Frank May: Last chance to go on the Reno train trip this weekend, for $395. Frank will sell you the ticket. . . . Debbie Roessler announced that the SMC Rotaract Club is working on a literacy event in which Rotarians could participate, and an event is planned for Saturday, April 26, which is Rotary at Work Day. Raffle: Marv Ellenberg didnt win all the marbles, but did defy the 50-50 odds and picked the Lucky White Marble, thus winning $340. Marv says its the first Club raffle hes ever won after contributing to Rotary Club raffles for decades, and he deserves the money. So there.

HEB provides in-home services regardless of the patients ability to pay, and will help identify financial resources, including grants, donations, Thrift Shop profits, or other sources.

~~PROGRAM~~
Our speaker today was Bobbie Preston, M.D., who has been active with Hospice of the East Bay (HEB) for about 30 years. She became the caregiver of her husband who was dying at the age of 39, but quickly found that the job was very difficult to do singlehandedly. A friend arranged for hospice care, which provided some respite from constant caregiving, as well as social service and grief counseling. The hospice movement was founded in London in the 1950s by Cicely Saunders, a nurse who was appalled at the lack of such services. In those days, about 85% of people would die at home, in familiar surroundings. How, only about 20% do. Hospice tries to maintain the patient in non-hospital care when appropriate. Since 1977, HEB has served about 22,000 patients, and currently has 237 patients under their care. They can customize a program to ensure the comfort of every patient during their last days, and have ways to help their family as well. They work with the primary care physician, and have specialists such as doctors, nurses, social workers, home health aides, spiritual and bereavement counselors, pharmacists, and many trained volunteers that help the patient and family. Patient home care can be in three stages: routine, continuous, and respite care, and hospice can provide acute medical care for hospital in-patients or in Bruns House, a large home in a residential neighborhood. Bruns House has been owned by HEB since 2004. The peaceful atmosphere and round-the-clock personal care make the patients and families stay a special experience.
