BATIK
n 2nd of October,
batik
isrecognized by UNESCO(United NationsEducational, Scientific, andCultural Organization) as a uniquehallmark of Indonesian heritage.
O
The word
batik
is originated fromJavanese, from Indonesia, as combinationof
amba
(to write) and
titik
(dot/point).The term was originally used for the traditional technique to color the cloth by manual wax-resist dyeing technique, but nowadays the term is used for thecloth that use
batik
patterns even thoughthe cloth doesn’t use
batik
technique.
 Batik
Technique
 Batik
maker uses the concept of resisting the dye using wax so dye colorsspecific part of cloth that is not waxed.Melted wax is applied to cloth before being dipped in dye then cloh ishung up to dry it.The melted wax is called
malam
inJavanese language.Sometimes there is more than onecolor, which means there will be repeated process of waxing, dyeing, and drying. After the last drying, the wax needsto be dissolved by either dipped the clothin solvent or ironed between paper towelsor newspapers, to absorb the wax andreveal the characteristic of
batik
: deeprich colors and fine crinkle lines.
 Batik Tulis
The traditional
batik
manualwaxing using
canting
, a tool of a copper  bowl with spout, which where the waxwill seeps out, and wooden hand in whichthe copper part is inserted.Fine spout is used for delicate lineswhile wide spot is used to fill over the background area. There is also bowl with multiplespots to make rosette of 5/7 points. The job to make
batik
using
canting
is usually exclusive for woman, except in the area of
 pesisir
, the coast. In other areas, another extra toolused such as in Indramayu, a fishingcommunity, which they use
complongan
which is like a comb with fine needles to penetrate wax to make
cocohan
, the dots.The
batik
that made using cantingis called
batik tulis
as

is “write” inIndonesian.

 Batik Cap
In around 20
th
century, Javanesedeveloped the copper block with
batik
pattern on it. The block is applied hotwax and then stamped to cloth. It is faster than manual write. As
cap
is “stamp” in Indonesian, the batik made by this method is named
batik cap
.
 Batik Cetak
As the textile industry got themodern advance, there are clothes thatincorporate
batik
pattern even though itdoesn’t use the
batik
technique. It prints the same designrepeatedly. Thus, as
batik

cetak
is theleast exclusive but the cheapest of all.
 Batik cetak
is the common namefor the clothes result from this method, as
cetak
is “print” in Indonesian. There is also special treatment, like putting the gold leaf or gold dust usinghandmade glue, which will stay on, evenafter the cloth has been washed. This is called
batik

 prada
as
 prada
is “gold” in Javanese, which is speciallydesigned for
 Keraton
