canine equivalent of fingers on a blackboard to us. Yes! I know... Putsome coins in an empty soda can and tape the opening shut. When yourbarking pooch doesn't respond try our command to "be quite!", shake thecan a couple of times. They don't like the sound, so they often stop whatthere doing when they hear it. You will probably get a shock reaction tothis sound, as they were not expecting it, and this quick result usuallystays with them, they learn much quicker.
Dampen their enthusiasm a bit:
To remind your dog that you'dappreciate some quite time, give him a firm 'NO!' followed with a shortblast from a squirt bottle. You may wonder... A squirt bottle, well, yes. They just don't like it, the jet of water coming from something like abottle is under pressure, and is not something that they would normallyexperience in the wild, so.. it is not something they are used, or hardwired into their brain. If they don't like water, they will tend to stop. Some dogs do like water though, with the exception that it is coming outunder pressure, I and see why it would not work, though you could trysetting it to a harsher jet of water, when squirted. It's best to aim for thebody and not for the face, this is for obvious reasons, as we would not dothis to ourselves either.
Seek deliverance from the mail man:
If you dog goes ballistic wheneverpeople come to the door, you may need the help of an accomplice. Onepossible solution is to have a talk to your mail man, and have your mailman slip a tasty treat through the door slot when he comes to deliveryour mail. Of course you would have to organize a spot where to keep thetreats, so that the mail man can just pick one up and do the deed close tothe door. Your dog may stop seeing these people as threats and mightnot feel the need to bark.
Bring them inside your home:
If your dog sleeps outside and likes toexercise their vocal cords at night, you may want to bring them indoors. Not only will they have less to bark at, they may also feel safer indoors, and not feel the need to bark at every sound outside, in which they mightfeel is a threat. This is also something I would advise if there is animpending storm coming your way. As dogs often don't like the sound orrumble of thunder.
Try gentle pressure:
Many experts recommend training collars, like the
Promise System
or the
Gentle Handler
, similar to the halters used onhorses, the collars may come with 10 foot leads. It is best to see what ison offer at the pet shop or on line, it sometimes pays to see whatdifferent products types are out there. When your dog starts barking, pulling the lead will gently press his mouth the few seconds that youapply pressure. In this way, your dog will gradually learn that thishappens every time they bark, and being not a favorable reaction, yourdog begins to work out if they stop barking this reaction wont happen. The beauty is that you will never have to scold your dog, or even sayanything to him, the collar speaks for itself by stopping the behavior. Thecollars are more humane and effective than a choke collar, and some dogswill start barking less, in as little as a few training sessions. If it takeslonger, persevere with your dog, as like people. We all learn at differentstages, some quicker, some slower. And I also have to say Yes! somebreed of dogs are smarter than others. So the smarter will work outthings in a shorter time, to achieve your required results.
Try shock therapy:
Your veterinarian may recommend a specialized barkcollar, which either delivers a high frequency sound or a light shockwhenever your dog barks. Some of the collars go off immediately, whileothers allow the dog to bark a few times before kicking in. They can beextremely effective, but you really need to work with someone who canhelp you get a good collar and training. You can ask your vegetarian forthis advise. Though, I would not recommend this sort of product use, unless you are not getting anywhere with your dog, or you are not thereto curb the barking during the day, these products are automatic and dothe job for you, if you cant be there.
