Halloween in the Park, held last Saturday at Charlie Daniels Park, reportedly drew around 7,000ghosts, goblins, skeletons, Michael Jackson look-alikes and princesses, as seen above as Hadley, Reese, and Abbie show off their loot from the day’s event. There were costume contests, animal petting boths, and a train ride, as well as food and vendors. “To me, Halloween in the Park exemplifies the great spiritof Mt Juliet,” remarked Mt. Juliet City Manager Randy Robertson. Don’t miss the Community YardSale in the park on October 24. For more info on park events visit www.cityofmtjuliet.org, keywordCity Calendar. ~

A Mt. Juliet manturned a hobby into alucrative challenge and wonrecently when he entered ablogging contest online forsmall business owners.Mark Evans, owner of BID Blinds inMt. Juliet, said he is “apretty avid sweeper asa hobby.” He keeps up with sweepstakes onlineand found one that waspractically catered tohim.“This happenedto show up on my(sweepstakes) sitelistings. This sweep was exclusive to smallbusinesses,” Evanssaid. “After beingselected as one of
ve
nalists and receivingthe HP 8500 Of
ceJetPro 8500 Wireless All-In-One Machine andsome startup supplies, we had a four week‘challenge’ to put themachine through itspaces and comment onour experiences for each week’s assignment. Ourblogs were posted on theHP Small and MediumBusiness website. Viewers were given the opportunityto vote for the blog theyliked each week. They couldvote on any criteria but wereencouraged to vote for theone that offered the best‘tip’ that they, too, couldincorporate or that wasuseful.”Evans said theexperience was “a challenge,”and it was a lot of fun. Hesaid the biggest challengefor him was “
nding time tomeet their deadlines.”“We usually hadabout 36 hours from receiptof the ‘assignment’ tosubmission of our blogs,”Evans said. “But they didsay we could tell them if oursubmission would be late. Itdidn’t actually get posted foranother four or
ve days.“The biggest thing Ilearned was how far thesemachines had come. Partof the ‘win’ included givingup our old printers or, in mycase, all-in-one machines. The quality of the endproduct far exceeded myexpectations and allows meto produce a high qualityproduct for my business,my clients and my personaluse without outsourcing. Icould not do that before. And because of some of theseprocesses I can cut downon supply use and expenseand time and energy usage. My HP contacts were reallyinsightful and helpful as well.”As a small businessowner in an economystruggling to recover froma recession, the grand prize was a boon for Evans andhis company.“Besides the initialitems of the 8500 andsupplies, as the Grand Prize winner, I also will receive aone year supply of paperand inks. Finally, I willget a professionallydesigned logo from a HPentity called Logoworks,I believe.”Evans said he hasowned his businessfor around 15 years, although it was his“baby brother” whoactually started thebusiness in the late1970s. Over the years hesaid “business has beensteady” in Mt. Juliet, and he has worked toadapt to changes in theindustry and businessin general.“Like everythingelse, the industry nowhas a wide offeringof ‘Green’ and energyef
cient offerings. Wecarry the best brandsand are very friendly onthe wallet when comparingapples to apples.”Evans has lived inMt. Juliet since 1997. His wife, Angie, has her owndecorating business, whichis what brought the twotogether, Evans said. Theyhave four grown children.BID Blinds provideseco-friendly custom windowtreatments to residentialand commercial clients.Evans’s blogcaptured
fty percent of the total votes. Visit http://expressioncentersmb. wetpaint.com/page/The+HP+Officejet+Pro+Challenge+for+Small+Businessesto read his blog or for moreinformation.

rst satellite campus west of Highway 109.The CommunityCenter at Charlie DanielsPark was unveiled to reveala 2,800 square foot, state-of-the-art meeting room, fully equipped kitchen andexpanded exercise area. This was yet another chapterin a story of a partnershipbetween the City of Mt. Juliet and the PanattoniCorporation. This past summer, the Hamilton brothers of the Panattoni Corporation,Hayne and Whit
eld, announced their intent tobuild a new facility just off the newly opened BeckwithRoad intersection at I-40 inMt. Juliet.“Being the excellentcorporate citizens thatthey are,” City ManagerRandy Robertson said, “theHamiltons donated a setof
agpoles and
ags tothe Charlie Daniels Park.During the installation,Hayne mentioned that he was looking for a world-classentertainer for their ground-breaking ceremony.”Enter CharlieDaniels, who performedat the Panattoni groundbreaking. Shortly thereafter,Panattoni agreed to assist with expanding Mt. Cumberland willoffer the BSN (Bacherlor’sof Science in Nursing)Completion Program at theShiloh Shopping Centerbeginning in January 2010 with 25 slots for students. The program will bestaffed with new and currentteachers. Classes will beheld on nights and weekendsfor working adults trying to
nish their degrees.“We chose Mt. Julietbecause of the growth patterncoming east from MetroNashville,” Eaton said. “We will be able to draw studentsfrom Donelson, Hermitage,Old Hickory and Mt. Juliet.”Eaton said that 175 peoplehad already signed up forthe 25 slots and hinted thatmore slots would open upin the future to make roomfor all those with interestin being a nurse. He alsosaid that Cumberland willalso offer Microbiologyas well as Anatomy andPhysiology classes and labsat Environmental ScienceCorporation, located onLebanon Road in Mt. Juliet.“Environmental ScienceCorporation is the largestenvironmental sciencecompany in the countrybased in one location with world-class facilities,” Eatonsaid. “This just goes to show why Cumberland Universityis the best small, private, liberal arts school around.” The idea for a Mt. Julietcampus was started in January 2004. Eaton saidhe would like to have moresatellite campuses in thefuture.
